UW-Oshkosh among the final 8 in NCAA D-3 Tournament

The state of Wisconsin went into the NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16 with three teams remaining in the field on Friday night.  One team, the Oshkosh Titans emerged as the field was reduced to eight teams heading into tonight’s Sectional Finals.

The Titans (23-7) got 32 points from Charlie Noone to knock off Emory college 93-72.  Oshkosh faces host Augustana at 7 p.m. tonight with the winner heading to the NCAA D-3 Final Four.

Both Platteville and Stevens Point lost in Platteville last night.  The host Pioneers fell to Nebraska-Wesleyan 79-78 as Nate Schimonitz hit a jumper with two seconds left to give the Prairie Wolves the last second win.

Earlier in Platteville, Stevens Point fell to top-ranked Whitman College 65-55.

NCAA D-3 basketball tournament is down to 16-teams

The NCAA Division 3 men’s basketball tournament has strong representation in the Sweet 16.  Three teams remain, including Platteville, which will host a four-team sectional on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Pioneers (24-4) will host Nebraska Wesleyan (26-3) (7:30 p.m.) in the second of two games, while fellow WIAC member Stevens Point (21-8) will meet top-ranked Whitman (28-1).  The Pointers captured the WIAC Conference tournament.

Oshkosh (22-7) will face Emory (23-4) of Atlanta in a sectional semifinal in Rock Island, Illinois.

Friday night winners will advance to the finals on Saturday for the right to play in the NCAA Final Four.

The Pioneers are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 after finishing last in the WIAC (1-13) a year ago.

Pointers claim fourth NCAA Division III national title

For the fourth time in the last six year, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference can claim ownership to the NCAA Division III National Champion after the UW-Stevens Point Pointers upended Augustana (Ill.) 70-54 in Salem, Va.

Four Pointers scored in double figures, led by senior Austin Ryf’s 17 points. Joe Ritchay scored 15 points, followed by Stephen Pelkofer’s 14 and Alex Richard’s 12. The Pointers shot 55.3 percent from the field and connected on 12-of-18 3-point attempts.

The championship is the fourth in program history and first since 2010. UW-Stevens Point won back-to-back championships in 2004 and 2005. [Read more…]

Pointers knock off #1 Whitewater

WIAC Logo-ColorStevens Point evened its head-to-head battle with top-ranked Whitewater, knocking off the Warhawks 72-69 in men’s college basketball action in the WIAC on Wednesday night.

The Pointers shot 58% from the field, getting a game-high 22 points from senior forward Jordan Lutz.  Whitewater started the day No. 2 in the WIAC in three-point field-goal defense (.314), but the Pointers made 9 of 16 from distance (56.3%).

The Warhawks saw their 13 game winning streak come to an end as the Pointers moved into first place, a half-game in front of the Warhawks in the WIAC.  The two teams split the season series after Whitewater won the first game in the series in January.

Stevens Point (19-4, 13-1 WIAC) has two games left to play.  Whitewater (19-3, 12-1) has three games left to play.

The Warhawks had four players in double figures, led by senior forward Steve Egan with 16 points.

Eau Claire 80, Platteville 62

Cardinal Stritch

Cardinal Stritch wrapped up the North Division title in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference by beating Roosevelt 81-60 in Chicago.
