Dominican makes history, Germantown denied at 100th WIAA Basketball Championships

Two teams entered the 100th WIAA Boys State Basketball Championships with an opportunity to add their name to the list of teams to win four-straight state titles, and only Whitefish Bay Dominican accomplished the task at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Six-foot-10 Diamond Stone a game-high 23 points as three-time defending champion Dominican beat previously undefeated Mineral Point 75-49, joining the Randolph teams of 2002-2005 as the only schools in state history to pull off the four-peat. Both did so in Division 4.

Earlier in the Day, Stone and Rice Lake’s Henry Ellenson were named co-Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Mr. Basketball. Ellenson, who is headed to Marquette, did not play in the Division 2 title game against Mt. Horeb due to a broken left hand suffered in Friday’s semifinals. [Read more…]

Whitewater is top seed for WIAC tournament

WIAC Logo-ColorUW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater each claimed a share of the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men’s basketball championship following games played on February 21.

The Pointers beat Superior 70-60 while the Warhawks knocked off Stout 86-77 on Saturday.

Stevens Point captured its third straight WIAC regular season title and 29th in program history.  It’s the 15th title in Warhawks program history.  It’s also the first time since 2005 that the conference title has been shared.

Whitewater received the No. 1 seed for the WIAC tournament via a coin flip tiebreaker, while Stevens Point gains the 2-seed.  Both get first round byes for the tournament, which starts Tuesday night.  No. 6 seed Eau Claire faces No. 3 seed River Falls and No. 5 seed Oshkosh takes on No. 4 seed Platteville.

The winner of the conference tournament receives the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Whitewater & Stevens Point remain unbeaten in NCAA Regional play

UW-Whitewater ran its win streak to five by rolling to a 13-3 win over UW-La Crosse in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Thursday at Whitewater.

The top seeded Warhawks improved to 38-7 and will meet Adrian (32-13) in a winners bracket game at noon on Friday.  La Crosse (26-8) has been eliminated.  Adrian also remains perfect in the Regional, beating Concordia-Chicago 4-1 yesterday.

Concordia-Chicago will face St. Norbert College (24-15) in a 3pm elimination game today.  St. Norbert College eliminated second-seeded Heidelberg 9-5 on Thursday.  It’s just the second NCAA tournament win in program history for the Green Knights.

Out west, UW Stevens Point remained perfect by beating Cal Lutheran 5-2 on Thursday.  For the Pointers, it sets up a date with defending NCAA Champion Linfield College in a winners bracket game today.

Warhawks end Point’s long win streak

Nick Bennett made his head coaching debut for Whitewater last night, filling in for coach Pat Miller who is recovering from cervical spine surgery.

What a debut it was for Bennett, who helped lead the Warhawks to a 81-76 win over UW-Stevens Point.  The top ranked Pointers saw their win streak to start the season end at 20-games.

NCAA Div. 3 baseball Regionals start Wednesday

UW-Stevens Point won the regular season WIAC Baseball title.  For their efforts, they’re the 2-seed in the Midwest Regional which opens tomorrow at UW-Whitewater.  The Pointers (35-9) will open play at 3pm against the 5-seed, Benedictine University (32-10), which received an at-large birth out of the Northern Athletics Conference.

The host team, Whitewater (34-7) also received an at large bid and is seeded No. 3.  The Warhawks will open play at 6pm against No. 4 Case Western Reserve (27-12), which is making its second NCAA tournament appearance.

St. Thomas (33-5) is the top seed.  They’ve won 25 of their last 26 games and will face the 6-seed, St. Scholastica (27-9) at noon Wednesday.

In the Central Regional in Moline, Illinois, Ripon College (24-14) is the 6-seed and will take on top-seeded Webster University (32-9) at noon Wednesday.

Pointers secure automatic bid to NCAA D-3 Regional

UW-Stevens Point pulled out a 6-5 win over UW-La Crosse in the WIAC Tournament on Sunday to secure the automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 baseball regionals.  That field will be announced today.

The Pointers (35-9) will likely stay in the Midwest Region and play at host UW-Whitewater.  The Warhawks finished the Tournament with a 34-7 record, but they’re expected to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA field.

La Crosse (21-21) eliminated top-seeded Whitewater 12-2, then knocked off the Pointers 2-1 to set up the winner-take-all WIAC Championship game.

NCAA Division 3 pairings announced

The NCAA Division 3 basketball tournament pairings were announced.

St. Norbert College opens up at Wheaton College on Saturday night.  Whitewater hosts Dubuque and Stevens Point will host Nothwestern College.

In women’s play, Whitewater hosts Wisconsin Lutheran, Carthage takes on Thomas More and Stevens Point squares off against Concordia-Moorhead.

Pointers lock up share of WIAC

In Division 3 men’s college hoops, 15th ranked Stevens Point squeaked by Stout 76-74 on Wednesday night to clinch at least a share of the WIAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.  The Pointers improved to 19-4 overall, 12-2 in the WIAC.

WIAC men’s basketball race remains tight

The race for the men’s WIAC regular season basketball championship remains tight.

UW-Stevens Point (19-4, 12-2 WIAC) survived a scare on Wednesday night, holding off UW-Oshkosh (4-18, 0-13) to win 87-83 in Oshkosh.  The Pointers have a half game lead on UW-Whitewater for the league lead.

UW-Whitewater (20-2, 11-2 WIAC) earned a 77-58 road victory over UW-Platteville (12-11, 6-8).

UW-River Falls is also just 1/2 game off the conference lead after the Falcons (17-5, 11-2 WIAC) rallied for a 57-56 win over the visiting Yellowjackets of UW-Superior (13-10, 7-7).

La Crosse also knocked off Stout 63-52.
