NFL preparing for contingency plans

April 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

With NFL teams holding virtual offseason programs, there’s a chance the league’s regular season won’t start on time.  According to a report in the Sports Business Journal, the league is considering several contingencies, just in case they can’t kick off the season on time.

The NFL schedule will be released early next month and it will be designed to handle a delay, even as far out as October 15th.  That would allow for a 16-game season without a bye week.

The league is also reportedly talking with Super Bowl host Tampa about the plan, which could push the league’s championship game back as far as February 28.

The main goals right now are to preserve a 16-game season and play the Super Bowl in February.

Three Packers on “Super Bowl 50 Golden Team”

January 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Packers logoThree Green Bay Packers were named to the “Super Bowl 50 Golden Team,” selected by Pro Football Hall of Fame voters.

Only one of the three game from the Packers’ Super Bowl I and II teams of the 1960’s, offensive tackle Forrest Gregg.

Defensive end Reggie White and kick returner Desmond Howard were both honored from the Packers Super Bowl XXXI team, which beat the New England Patriots 35-21 in New Orleans.

White broke a Super Bowl record with three sacks and Howard became the first special-teams player to be named the Super Bowl’s MVP after he returned four kickoffs for 154 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown and six punts for 90 yards.

Packers Nation shocked with OT loss in Seattle (AUDIO)

Sunday’s 28-22 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks is clearly one of the worst playoff losses in Green Bay Packers history.  It may not top the list, but it’s close.

The Packers dominated play for most of the game, but left the door open just enough for the Seahawks to pull off a 12-point comeback in the final two minutes to force overtime and eventually pull out the win.

While the Packers were busy crushing the spirits of the Seahawks, they were missing opportunities to put the Seahawks away.  They settled for field goals instead of scoring touchdowns early on, yet still led 16-0 at halftime and 19-7 with just under four minutes to play.

Seattle fans were starting to slowly trickle towards the exits, only to miss a comeback of the ages.

Nothing went right for Russell Wilson until the fourth quarter.  He had thrown four interceptions as the Seahawks offense was suffocating against the Packers defense.  [Read more…]

Minneapolis awarded 2018 Super Bowl

May 21, 2014 By Bill Scott

Build a new stadium and there’s a good chance that a Super Bowl will follow.

Minneapolis is the latest city to put the building of a new stadium in motion and see the NFL reward their efforts.  The Minnesota Vikings will open their new $1 billion dollar stadium in time for the 2016 NFL season.

The owners chose Minneapolis over New Orleans and Indianapolis.  The last time the Twin Cities hosted a Super Bowl was in 1992 at the Metrodome.  That facility has since been torn down, to replaced by the new facility which is under construction.

Prior to 2018, the Super Bowl will make stops in Glendale, Arizona next year, followed by Santa Clara, California and Houston.

The stadium in Minneapolis will hold up to 72,000 for the Super Bowl.

January 25, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers were an organization going nowhere for two-plus

Mike Holmgren

decades.  That’s when general manager Ron Wolf hired Mike Holmgren to coach the Packers.  It was that move that set the wheels in motion once again for the Green Bay Packers organization.

Holmgren led the Packers into the playoffs in six of his seven seasons, compiling an overall record of 75-37.  The Packers won the NFC Central three times and NFC Championship twice.  Under Holmgren, the Packers won the Super Bowl in the 1996 season.

Those accomplishments will land Holmgren into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in late July.  Ron Wolf will be Holmgren’s presenter during the July 21st ceremony. [Read more…]

Black Eyed Peas scoring decent at the Super Bowl

February 7, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Black Eyed Peas were the headliners of the NFL Super Bowl XLV halftime show and by most accounts, they performed well.

Super Bowl Halftime Show

Fergie, the first female to appear in a Super Bowl halftime show since Janet Jackson in 2004, had no wardrobe surprises.  She joined former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, performing the band’s song “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”

Usher dropped in from the ceiling as well, performing a duet on his hit “OMG” with Black Eyed Peas will.i.am.

The Peas’ performance ended the same way it began, singing their hit “I gotta Feeling”.

Christina Aguilera messed up the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner”.  Lea Michele, who stars in the Fox show “Glee”, sang “America the Beautiful.”
