Rodgers joins Starr in MVP circles

February 7, 2011 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers accomplished something Brett Favre never did: win a Super Bowl MVP.

Rodgers passed for 304 yards and three touchdowns in the Green Bay Packers 31-25 Super Bowl XLV win over the Pittsburgh

Aaron Rodgers & Lombardi Trophy

Steelers.   His numbers could have been much better had it not been for several dropped balls, including one by James Jones that looked it had touchdown written all over it.

Rodgers is the second Green Bay quarterback to be selected as the Super Bowl MVP.  Bart Starr was the MVP of the Packers’ victories in Super Bowls I and II.  When Rodgers was asked after the game about carving his own legacy in the post-Brett Favre era, Rodgers praised the organization for standing by him instead.

AUDIO: Rodgers said the organization believed in him :18

Rodgers MVP numbers came against a Steelers defense that allowed an average of 14.5 points a game all season.  That is number 1 in the NFL.  He finished the game with a passer rating of 111.5 and now has a career passer rating of 112.6.

Rodgers is only the third QB to pass for 300-plus yards and three touchdowns without an interception in a Super Bowl.  Joe Montana and Steve Young are the others.

Rodgers ended the postseason with 1,094 passing yards and 9 touchdowns.

Packers claim 4th Super Bowl with win over Steelers (AUDIO)

February 7, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers jumped out to a 21-3 lead and then had to hang on for a 31-25 Super Bowl XLV win over the Pittsburgh

Aaron Rodgers with Trophy and Belt

Steelers on Sunday night.

The Packers pulled out the victory, despite missing two of it’s leaders for the entire second half, Charles Woodson (broken collarbone) and Donald Driver (severe ankle sprain).  In addition, cornerback Sam Shields missed a good portion of the second half with a shoulder injury and safety Nick Collins missed time due to cramping.

It was fitting the way the Packers won the game, because they’ve had to battle through injuries all season long.  Now they had to figure out a way to make it through the Super Bowl with more backups stepping into the lineup.  Playing both Jarrett Bush who collected an interception of Brad Roethlisberger and Pat Lee for much of the second half, Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers took his team out of man to man coverage and played all zone in the second half to help out Bush and Lee. Now Woodson is back for another chance, with the Green Bay Packers, as they face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl 45.

Following are some thoughts from Woodson as he pursues his first title.

Driver expected to play

February 5, 2011 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was limited in practice with a quad injury on Friday, but coach Mike McCarthy

Donald Driver

expects Driver to play on Sunday.

Driver injured his calf during practice on Wednesday.  He suffered a quad injury earlier in the season and has bothered him off and one the rest of the way.

McCarthy said he would be surprised if Driver didn’t play on Sunday.  He said Driver would have practiced on Friday if he would have let him.

Driver knows the offense and has had a whole week to prepare the current game plan.  If anybody can miss preparation time and be OK for the game, it would be Driver.

Packers linebacker Erik Walden (ankle) was limited.  He is listed as questionable on the injury report and a decision on his availability will be made on game day.

Steelers starting center Maurkice Pouncey didn’t practice on Friday and will not play in Sunday’s Super Bowl.  He’s been sidelined by a high ankle sprain that he suffered in the AFC championship game against the Jets.

Doug Legursky will make his first career start at center in his place.

Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith (triceps) was limited in practice and has been ruled out.

McCarthy uses basketball movie clip for motivation

February 5, 2011 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy pulled out the movie “Hoosiers” to motivate his team this week.  He broke out clips from

Mike McCarthy

the 1986 movie about a small-town Indiana high school basketball team.

McCarthy said, “I know everybody loves the movie ‘Hoosiers’, that moment when the basketball team walks into the arena and they measure the foul line and that’s 15 feet, and they measure the hoop, that’s 10 feet, and everybody goes ‘OK, it’s big in here, but…’ and that’s our approach.”

At a Friday morning press conference, Mike McCarthy was asked what a championship would mean to him.  “I’ve always dreamt about championships.  The opportunity to be in the National Football League since 1993, this is definitely th goal.  It’s obvious that it’s heightened with my opportunity of being the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.  And the opportunity to bring this trophy back home is something that we all think about as a football team and organization on a daily basis.”

February 5, 2011 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Edgar Bennett has been wearing his Super Bowl ring around this week, letting it serve as a

reminder of the Packers last Super Bowl victory, a Super Bowl XXXI triumph over the New England Patriots.

Bennett was a starting halfback on that team.  He acquired a ring as a player and now he’s after one as a coach.  We asked Bennett what the ring means to him.

AUDIO: Edgar Bennett explains the meaning of a Super Bowl ring to him :17

Bennett hasn’t had the ring on for practice or most of the media obligations in Dallas, but he has wore it much of the rest of the week.  He said wearing the ring is special.

Weather causing chaos for Super Bowl week!

February 2, 2011 By Bill Scott

Winter weather is affecting a big portion of the country right now and Dallas,

Cowboys Stadium / Mike Clemens Photo

Texas, which is hosting Super Bowl 45, is no exception.

An ice storm in the Dallas area has made travel difficult.  It’s cancelled school’s and even ruined some of the Super Bowl exhibits.  And for fans trying to get to “Big D” early, Dallas-Forth Worth airport closed down for awhile.  Even when things are back to semi-normal in Dallas, the rest of the country is still having weather problems which is seeing flights cancelled every hour. Media Day is history, now it’s time for football

February 2, 2011 By Bill Scott

There was a time when the NFL’s Super Bowl Media Day actually served a

Nickelodeon's "Pick Boy"

purpose.  But yesterday’s event at the new Cowboys Stadium showed once again how ridiculous the event has become.

It’s no longer about football and hasn’t been for some time.  Discussion of Super Bowl 45 and the match-up between the Packers and Steelers won’t actually get into full swing until today when the two teams practice for the first time since arriving in Dallas on Monday.

If you’re a real journalist looking to talk football, you picked the wrong gathering.  Instead, you get the likes of the cape-wearing “Pick Boy” from Nickelodeon.  It’s an event where no question is a bad question.  In fact the bizarre is welcomed and almost encouraged.

Some players have fun with it, others would rather skip the event.  But at this point, all publicity for the NFL is good publicity when it comes to Super Bowl Media Day.  That means you can expect this event to continue for years to come.
