Wisconsin junior linebacker T.J. Watt has been named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week and redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook is the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week.

Watt recorded six tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, to help the Badgers knock off Michigan State 30-6 in East Lansing on Saturday.

Watt had a career high 2.5 quarterback sacks, giving him 4.5 over his last three games.

The Badgers defense held the Spartans without a touchdown at home for just the second time since 2000.

Hornibrook threw for 195 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.  He went 9-for-13 for 136 yards and a touchdown.  He guided Wisconsin to its 11th win in its last 12 Big Ten road games and its first win at Spartan Stadium since 2002.

Steve, Watt to miss time

Wisconsin Badger junior quarterback Joel Stave and freshman tight end T.J. Watt will both miss time due to injuries.  The announcement was made this morning by Badger head coach Gary Andersen.

Andersen said, “Joel has been dealing with some issues with his throwing shoulder for the last couple of weeks and we have come to a decision, after talking with Joel, that the best thing for him right now is to shut it down and give him some rest.  It was a tough decision because Joel is a great competitor and has a tremendous desire to help this team.  We will continue to monitor his progress but we’re not putting a timetable on his return at this time.”

T.J. Watt suffered a right knee injury during training camp that required surgery.  Andersen said, “He will miss an extended amount of time but we hope to have him back on the practice field at some point during the conference season.”

Stave’s injury means there’s a chance freshman D.J. Gillins could see some playing time behind Tanner McEvoy this season.
