Cubs claim Gamel off waivers from Brewers

October 3, 2013 By Bill Scott

First baseman Mat Gamel was claimed off waivers on Thursday by the Chicago Cubs.  Gamel hasn’t played since May 2012 because of a pair of ACL tears.

The Milwaukee Brewers placed Gamel and Taylor Green on waivers on Wednesday after they both sat out the entire 2013 season because of injury.  Green cleared waivers and was assigned to Class AAA Nashville.  Green could stay with the Brewers organization or leave in free agency.

Gamel was the Brewers starting first baseman in 2012 when he tore the ACL in his right knee chasing a foul pop in San Diego.  He was expected to return in 2013, but tore the same ACL early in spring training this year, undergoing another season ending surgery.

Brewers place Gamel and Green on waivers

October 3, 2013 By Bill Scott

Mat Gamel and Taylor Green spent the entire 2013 season on the sidelines, rehabbing injuries.  Yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers placed both players on waivers.  If they clear waivers today, Gamel and Green could stay with the organization on minor-league deals.

The 28-year-old Gamel nas not played since tearing his ACL on May 1, 2012 at San Diego.  He was the Brewers starting first baseman at the time.

Corey Hart took over at first base last season, had surgery on his right knee in January and then on his left knee in July and never played in 2013.  The Brewers are considering whether to sign Hart for 2014, likely to a deal heavy in incentives.

Those injuries forced the Brewers to handle first base by committee last season.  Seven players made their first big-league starts there.

Minor League Suspension

Brewers minor-league pitcher Dylan Brock received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.  That suspension takes effect at the start of the 2014 season.

List of Brewers headed for WBC is growing (VIDEO)

January 16, 2013 By Bill Scott

Right handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo and catcher Martin Maldonado are the latest Milwaukee Brewers committed to playing in the World Baseball Classic this spring.

Gallardo will play for Mexico and Maldonado will play for Puerto Rico.

A total of seven Brewers now have committed to the WBC.  Outfielder Ryan Braun and catcher Jonathan Lucroy were first added to Team USA’s roster.  A short time later, relievers John Axford and Jim Henderson, along with infielder Taylor Green will play for Team Canada.

With Lucroy and Maldonado playing in the WBC, the Brewers will be missing their top two catchers for a few weeks during spring training.

WRN contributor Justin Hull from WSCO/WHBY Radio in Appleton discussed Brewers and the WBC with Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash on Tuesday night at the Red Smith Sports Banquet.

Relievers John Axford and Jim Henderson and infielder Taylor Green were selected to play for team Canada.

That makes five now, the number of Brewers set to play in the spring classic.  Outfielder Ryan Braun and catcher Jonathan Lucroy were selected to play for Team USA.

More Brewers could be added in the following days to other squads.  Pitchers Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada could join team Mexico.

Rules stipulate that teams can only lose 8 players from the 40-man roster for the World Baseball Classic.

Green sent back to minors

July 9, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers made a roster move on Sunday after their 5-3 win over the Houston Astros.  They sent infielder Taylor Green to Class AAA Nashville to allow Green to get some more consistent playing time.

The Brewers didn’t announce a corresponding player move but they’re expected to call up another infielder later this week.

Green started just 1-game since mid-June since Corey Hart became entrenched at first base.  Green is hitting just .198 over his last 81 at-bats.
