La Crosse eliminated from D-3 CWS (AUDIO)

Both Wisconsin teams have been eliminated from the NCAA Division 3 College World Series field.

UW-Whitewater was eliminated Saturday night, falling 4-3 to St. John Fisher of New York.  The Warhawks saw their season come to an end at 34-17.

UW-La Crosse followed suit on Sunday night, falling to SUNY Cortland 8-3 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

The Eagles (39-10) got three hits from Ben Morgan, but senior Taylor Kohlwey went 0 for 5, seeing his 51-game hitting streak come to an end.

SUNY Cortland eliminated La Crosse in last year’s championship game.

Five teams still remain in the field, heading to action on Monday morning.

La Crosse still alive, Whitewater eliminated from D-3 CWS

The 4th ranked UW-La Crosse baseball team remains alive for at least one more day at the NCAA Division 3 College World Series at Fox Cities Stadium.  Their WIAC counterpart, UW-Whitewater lost their first two games and has been eliminated from the double elimination tournament.

The Eagles responded from a 8-0 shutout loss in game one to Trinity with a 12-3 win over Emory University in an elimination game at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Eagles broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning to go up 9-3 and cruise to their 39th victory (39-9) of the season.  They finished with 18 hits for the game.

La Crosse will play next at 4:30 this afternoon against the loser of the game between the State University of New York Cortland and Trinity University. [Read more…]

Field is set for NCAA D-3 CWS

The WIAC made history on Saturday when two of its teams qualified for the NCAA D-3 baseball College World Series at Fox Cities Stadium later this week.

UW-La Crosse, as the top seed in the Midwest Regional, beat St. John’s 5-3 in the title game at Copeland Park on Saturday.  UW-Whitewater, also a top seed in the Central Regional, swept fifth-seeded Rose-Hulman 11-0 and 5-3 in the championships games in Sauget, Illinois to gain a spot in the field.

La Crosse (38-8) will open play on Friday at 1:15pm against Trinity of Texas (39-8).  Whitewater (34-15) will play at 7:45 Friday night against La Roche of Pittsburgh.

In the La Crosse win, starter Caleb Boushley (10-0) scattered eight hits and struck out five.  Taylor Kohlwey had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 49 straight games, second most in team NCAA Division 3 history. [Read more…]

At the NCAA Division 3 baseball Regionals,

Starting with the Midwest Regional in La Crosse, the host Eagles remain unbeaten in the double elimination tournament, rolling to a 12-3 win over Concordia-Chicago.

The victory puts the Eagles in the Midwest Regional Championship at 3:30 this afternoon.  It’s also the 37th win of the season for La Crosse, breaking the record of 36 set in 2015.

Taylor Kohlwey’s first inning double extended his hitting streak to 48 games, the second longest in NCAA Division III history.  He also tied his own school record (2014) with his 88th hit of the season, and broke the UWL single-season record for doubles in a season with 21.  Kohlwey would later add his 89th hit of the season. La Crosse & Whitewater both win on day 1 of NCAA’s

UW-La Crosse turned their first round NCAA Division 3 Midwest Regional matchup with Beloit College into an easy win.  The Eagles scored in every inning but the  third in posting a 17-2 win over the Buccaneers.

Eagles slugger Taylor Kohlwey extended his hitting streak to 46 straight games, going 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and five runs batted in.

La Crosse improved to 35-8 and will face St. John’s of Minnesota late this afternoon in a winners bracket contest.

Beloit College fell to 27-13 and will face St. Scholastica in a losers bracket contest this morning.

Warhawks advance

In the Central Regional in Sauget, Illinois, top seeded Whitewater won their opening round game, 11-4 over Westminster of Missouri.

The Warhawks will face Augustana of Illinois this afternoon in second round action.

La Crosse sweeps top WIAC Baseball Awards

UW-La Crosse’s Taylor Kohlwey was named the WIAC’s Position Player of the Year.  Teammate Caleb Boushley was named the Pitcher of the Year and Eagles head coach Chris Schwarz was named the league’s Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

It’s the second Position Player of the Year honor for Kohlwey, who also won it back in 2014.  He becomes the third player in league history to win the award twice, joining UW-Oshkosh’s Jeremy Jirschele (2004 & 2005) and UW-Whitewater’s Marty Herum (2012 & 2013).

Kohlwey leads all NCAA Division 3 hitters with a .494 batting average.  He carries a 45-game hitting streak into today’s NCAA Division 3 Midwest Regional opener against Beloit College in La Crosse. [Read more…]

La Crosse wins WIAC baseball title

UW-La Crosse scored six times in the bottom of the first inning to wipe out a one-run deficit to knock off UW-Whitewater in the WIAC title game at Copeland Park in La Crosse.

Senior outfielder Taylor Kohlwey, who started the day hitting .284, ripped a three-run homer in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 45 games.  Kohlwey hit for the cycle and finished 4 for 5 with four rbi and three runs scored, raising his average to .497.

Kohlwey’s hitting streak started last season and is the 3rd longest in Division 3 history.

The Eagles (34-8), who finished as division 3 runner-up last season will host an NCAA Regional and will open play Wednesday against Midwest Conference Champion Beloit college.

Whitewater received an at large bid and will take on Westminster of Missouri at Webster College on Wednesday in the Central Regional.

The regional winners will advance to the NCAA Division 3 College World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in the Fox Cities starting May 27th.
