Goldschmidt powers Cardinals past Brewers

March 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

St. Louis slugger Paul Goldschmidt clubbed three home runs on Friday night, leading the Cardinals to a 9-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Goldschmidt entered the game  hitting .359 with a 1.114 OPS against the Brewers in his career.  He’s a career .407 hitter with a 1.271 OPS in Milwaukee.

Freddy Peralta fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but the Brewers managed to tie the game 3-3 when Ryan Braun clubbed a three run homer off of Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty.

Peralta allowed singles to Flaherty and Matt Carpenter to start the fourth inning and Brewers skipper Craig Counsell had seen enough.  Matt Albers came on and held the Cardinals to a single run for a 4-3 St. Louis lead. [Read more…]

Matt Kemp homered twice to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 11-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday at Miller Park.  The loss for the Brewers is their 9th in the last 11 games, as they dropped two of three in the series.

The Dodgers hit Brewers starter Brent Suter hard and continued their assault on reliever Taylor Williams.  Suter left after three innings with a left forearm strain, the same injury that landed him on the 10-day disabled list previously.  Manager Craig Counsell said Suter is headed back for another stint on the DL.

“It’s a really disappointing setback,” said Suter.  “I’m really disappointed for letting the team down today.  I didn’t pitch well and then I got hurt to boot.  It was just a real disappointing day.

Suter allowed six earned runs on eight hits.  His replacement, Taylor Williams allowed five runs, three of which were earned, in just one inning of work.  In two outings since the all-star break, Williams has allowed nine hits and seven runs (5 earned) in two innings. [Read more…]

Brewers drop exhibition finale in Houston

March 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers lost both of their exhibition games in Houston, falling to the Astros in Tuesday’s finale 8-1.

The Brewers finished exhibition play 19-12-2.

Houston’s Carlos Correa clubbed an opposite-field grand slam in the first inning off of Brewers starter Zach Davies.  In his final tune-up for the regular season, Davies pitched three innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Charlie Morton went 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, no walks and he struck out eight.

The Brewers will still have to finalize their roster before Thursday’s regular season opener in San Diego.  They have three relievers for two jobs in the bullpen, to be decided between J.J. Hoover, Oliver Drake and Taylor Williams.  They also will have to decide between Jesus Aguilar and Ji-Man Choi for the final spot in the bench.

It’s also possible the Brewers could make a late deal instead of sending a player to the minors or giving them their all-out release.
