Horizon League Roundup

Horizon League LogoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers blew an 11-point lead with just under eleven minutes to play and fell to Northern Kentucky 75-71.

J.J. Panoske hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers (15-9, 6-5 HL) a 60-49 second half lead.  The Norse (9-14, 6-7 HL) outscored the Panthers 26-11 the rest of the way.

Panoske had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers.

Green Bay falls at Wright State

Wright State jumped out to a big lead early and went on to beat the Green Bay Phoenix 79-60 at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday.

The Phoenix turned it over ten times in the first ten minutes and a season high 18 times in the game. [Read more…]

Phoenix women lose their first game

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix women took a nine-point lead into the locker room, but couldn’t hang on, falling to Virginia 68-59 in the opening round of the Paradise Jam Tournament in the St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tesha Bucks poured in 24 points in the loss for the Phoenix.

Virginia went in front late in the third quarter and never looked back, sending the Phoenix to their first loss (2-1) of the season.

Green Bay out-rebounded Virginia 30-26 but lost the turnover battle 22-16.

Green Bay faces Tulane today at 12-noon.

Phoenix women ousted in NCAA Tournament opener

The ninth-seeded Green Bay Phoenix women gave undefeated and eighth-seeded Princeton all it could handle in Saturday’s NCAA Women’s Tournament opener; however, the Tigers prevailed 80-70 in College Park, Maryland.

Green Bay seemingly had an answer for every Princeton run, but could not stop the Ivy League champions on the inside. The Tigers owned a 49-22 edge on the boards, including 17 offensive rebounds. It added up to 19-4 advantage on points in the paint.

Mehryn Kraker drained five 3-pointers and shot 8-of-16 en route to a game-high 21 points. Kaili Lukan added 17 points and Tesha Buck 14. Buck finished 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. [Read more…]

Green Bay women land spot in NCAA field

Tesha Buck scored 24 points and freshman Allie LeClaire added 17 as the Green Bay Phoenix women knocked off Wright State 86-77 in overtime, laying claim to the Horizon League Tournament championship.

Green Bay (28-4) improved to 13-4 all time in Horizon League Championship games.  They avenged a loss to the Raiders in last years Tournament Championship game.

Green Bay lands three on All-Horizon League second-team

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s team landed three players on the All-Horizon League Second-Team today.  Tesha Buck, Megan Lukan and Mehryn Kraker were each recognized by the Horizon League today.  Lukan also landed a spot on the All-Defensive Team for the second straight season.

The Phoenix failed to land a player on the All-Horizon League first-team for the second straight season, despite finishing 25-4 overall and winning the league title by a whopping three games with a 15-1 HL record.

Borseth claims 600th career win

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team cruised to a 87-45 victory on Thursday night, giving coach Kevin Borseth his 600th career victory.

Borseth became the 51st coach in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 600 wins.

The victory leaves Green Bay (21-4, 11-1) one win shy of clinching its 17th-straight Horizon League regular season championship.  They’ll face Illinois-Chicago on Saturday at the Kress Center.

Tesha Buck continued to stay hot, scoring 16 points to lead five Green Bay players in double figures.  Ellen Edison tied her season high with 14 points.  She hit 4 of 6 from three-point range.  The Phoenix as a team hit 12 of 25 from beyond the arc.

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team completed a sweep of their two-game regular season series against Wright State, beating the Raiders 61-45 last night at the Kress Events Center in Green Bay.

The win leaves Green Bay (19-4, 9-1 Horizon League) in the driver’s seat for their 17th straight Horizon League title.  They’re up 2-full games on Wright State in the Horizon League, plus they own the tie-breaker.

Green Bay’s stellar defense held Wright State standout Tay’ler Mingo to just 10 points and the Raiders to a season low in points scored.

Green Bay’s Tesha Buck had 15 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists to lead three players in double figures.  Mehren Kraker added 14 points, reaching double figures for the seventh straight game.  Sam Terry added 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers.

Green Bay never trailed in this game and they held down a Wright State team that averaged 98.3 points in its last three games.  The Raiders came into the game averaging 79.6 points a game for the season.

The Phoenix hit the road to face the Milwaukee Panthers on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Green Bay Phoenix routs Duquesne

After knocking off 24th ranked Purdue in West Lafayette last Wednesday, the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team cruised to a 84-52 win over Duquesne in Green Bay’s home opener on Saturday at the Kress Center.

The Phoenix led by as many as 33 points as Tesha Buck went 6-for-8 from three-point range.  The 5’11 sophomore finished with a game-high 24 points, matching her personal best.  She hit 9-of-12 overall from the field.

Senior Ellen Edison was perfect from the field, hitting all four of her shots, including 3-for-3 from distance.

As a team, Green Bay (3-1) hit a season-high 12 three-pointers (in 21 chances).

Duquesne (0-3) closed the gap early to 21-18, but Green Bay responded with a 10-0 run to make it 31-18, then finished the half with a 9-0 run to go up 44-24 at the half.

The win for the Phoenix is their 15th straight in home openers.

The Phoenix, having played three of its first four games on the road, heads back out again to play in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Naples, Florida.  The teams first game will be Friday morning at 11am against Georgia Tech.  The field also includes defending national champion Connecticut, which is in the other half of the bracket.  Green Bay is hoping to face the Huskies in the tournament championship game on Sunday.

UWGB routs Titans in exhibition

Mehryn Kraker scored 15 points to lead the UW-Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team to a 61-34 win over UW-Oshkosh in the final exhibition tune-up prior to the start of the regular season.

Kraker hit 7 of 9 from the field and pulled down 6 rebounds in the win.

Sam Terry added 12 points for the Phoenix.Taylor Schmidt, Eliza Campbell and Alex Richard each scored six points for the Titans.

The Phoenix now get ready for their regular season opener, Nov. 15 at Marquette.
