Expect more yellow flags to fly in NFL games this season

If Thursday’s training camp practice is any indication, we could see an increase in the number of penalties called by NFL officials this season.

NFL Referee Ed Hochuli and three members of his officiating crew took to the practice field on Thursday.  In a one-on-one drill between Green Bay Packers wide receivers and defensive backs, flags were flying on a regular basis.  In fact, Hochuli said, “I think we had 10 (penalties) out of the first 10 plays on the defensive backs in the receiver drill.”

The defensive players don’t like it.  If wide receivers push-off and the defenders aren’t allowed to push back, then we’ll witness a one-sided scenario.  Wide receivers will have a field day.

Hochuli said the players will adjust, and they’ll have to, because the guys in stripes will be watching.

“Grabbing the jersey or any other part of the receiver’s uniform is defensive holding and will be called regardless whether or not the official deems that the grab impeded or restricted the receiver,” said Hochuli. [Read more…]

Packers add WR to roster (Video)

July 30, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have claimed WR Gerrard Sheppard off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.  The transaction was announced earlier this afternoon by Packers General Manager Ted Thompson.

Sheppard is a first-year player out of Towson, spending the entire 2013 season on the Ravens’ practice squad.  He was originally signed by Baltimore as a rookie free agent on May 3, 2013.

Sheppard began his college career at the University of Connecticut, where he played in eight games over two seasons before transferring.  In his final two seasons, he started nine of 23 games he played in for Towson.  He had 52 catches for 584 yards and five touchdowns.

Packers sign Jones in time for camp

July 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers finally have all eleven 2013 draft picks under contract.  The last domino fell in place two days before the start of training camp.

Packers first round pick Datone Jones reportedly agreed to his rookie deal on Wednesday.  The 26th pick in this April’s draft will reportedly make $7.7-million over four-years.

There wasn’t any fear that the rookie defensive end out of UCLA would end up without a deal when camp starts Friday morning.  In the new collective bargaining agreement, rookie wage slotting was implemented based on where a player was picked.

Training camp opens for the Packers Friday morning at 8:20 AM.  The team will be in shells for Friday’s work and also Saturday’s 8:20 AM practice.  Sunday will be the first full-pad practice of camp and will also start at 8:20 AM.  Monday is an off day for the team.
