Packers dig early hole, throttled by 49ers

November 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Sunday nights NFC showdown in Santa Clara, California was supposed to provide a measuring stick for both the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers.  It did just that, but it wasn’t the result the Packers or their fans had hoped for.

The 49ers put up a statement as they pummeled the Packers 37-8.  Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 253 yards and two scores as San Francisco improved to 10-1.

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers felt the 49ers defensive pressure and was sacked five times.  He threw for just 104 yards and a touchdown, one of the worst performances of his career.

There’s a lot to be concerned about for the Packers.  First and foremost, they were the healthy team with a bye week of rest.  The 49ers were just the opposite but you wouldn’t have known by watching Sunday night’s onslaught.  The 49ers were clearly the more physical team. [Read more…]

Packers late defensive stand produces win over the Panthers

The Green Bay’s defense surrendered a lot of yardage throughout Sunday’s game, but in the end, they held NFL MVP candidate Christian McCaffrey short of the goal line as time expired and the Packers held on for a 24-16 win at snowy Lambeau Field.

Aaron Jones rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns, the second time this season he’s rushed for three scores.  Jones is the first Packers player since Sterling Sharpe in 1994 with multiple three-touchdown games in a season.  He is also the first Green Bay running back since Jim Taylor in 1962 with multiple three-touchdown games in a season.  Taylor did it three times that year.

The Panthers got the ball back with 2:25 left on their own 11-yard line, trailing by eight points.  Quarterback Kyle Allen drove the Panthers down the field, including completing a 12-year pass to D.J. Moore on fourth-and-10 with 56 seconds left. [Read more…]

Packers send Davis to Raiders

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

Just over two weeks into the season, the Green Bay Packers sent wide receiver and return specialist Trevor Davis to the Oakland Raiders with a reported sixth-round draft pick coming back to Green Bay in return.

On Monday, the Packers had claimed kick return specialist Tremon Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.  Smith was a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs last year and finished fourth in the NFL in kick returns with a 26.9 yard average.

Smith had experimented as a running back during Chiefs training camp this past summer, but the Packers plan to use him on defense.

Smith has not returned punts in the NFL.  That job could go to undrafted rookie Darrius Shepherd.

Davis had just one catch this season for the Packers, good for 28 yards in the opener against the Bears.  He had three punt returns for one yard to go along with seven fair catches.

The Raiders are scheduled to face the Packers, on Oct. 20 at Lambeau Field.
