Packers send Davis to Raiders

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

Just over two weeks into the season, the Green Bay Packers sent wide receiver and return specialist Trevor Davis to the Oakland Raiders with a reported sixth-round draft pick coming back to Green Bay in return.

On Monday, the Packers had claimed kick return specialist Tremon Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.  Smith was a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs last year and finished fourth in the NFL in kick returns with a 26.9 yard average.

Smith had experimented as a running back during Chiefs training camp this past summer, but the Packers plan to use him on defense.

Smith has not returned punts in the NFL.  That job could go to undrafted rookie Darrius Shepherd.

Davis had just one catch this season for the Packers, good for 28 yards in the opener against the Bears.  He had three punt returns for one yard to go along with seven fair catches.

The Raiders are scheduled to face the Packers, on Oct. 20 at Lambeau Field.

Packers go with backups in exhibition loss to Raiders

August 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he had planned to play his starters in last night’s third preseason game against the Oakland Raiders in Winnipeg.  However, field turf issues in each end zone saw both teams remove their starters from any playing consideration, meaning this game would be decided by the backups.

Tim Boyle led the Packers to three straight touchdown drives in the second quarter, throwing touchdown passes to Trevor Davis and Jake Kumerow, finishing 16 of 25 for 191 yards.  The Packers took a 21-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.  But the Raiders scored all 12-points in the second half, including a last second 33-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson, lifting Oakland to a 22-21 victory over the Packers (1-2).

Both teams weren’t satisfied with the condition of the field after the Canadian Football League goalposts left big holes that needed to be filled.  So they agreed to shorten the field to 80-yards and eliminated kickoffs for the game.  It meant the 10-yard line would now represent the new goal lines and the real [Read more…]

Packers place Davis on IR

September 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

The Green Bay Packers placed third-year wide receiver Trevor Davis on injured reserve on Tuesday.  They claimed CB Deante Burton off of waivers from Atlanta to fill the roster spot.

Davis was a late addition to the Packers injury report this past weekend when he showed up to Lambeau Field with his hamstring acting up.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday said the team took him out on the field for an early workout and “he wasn’t ready to go”.

Davis missed most of the preseason with hamstring issues but returned for the final preseason game in Kansas City.

Burton was an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State who spent all of the 2017 season on the practice squad.  He played mostly on special teams for the Falcons last Thursday night before being released.

The Packers also released safety Marwin Evans from their practice squad and released corner Quinten Rollins and running back Devante Mays on Monday with injury settlements.

The Packers filled the open spot on their practice squad by signing CB Will Redmond.

Packers getting healthier as they prepare to host Pittsburgh on Thursday

August 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson is among those that returned to practice on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers had a number of players return to the practice field on Sunday.

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, corner Kevin King, left tackle David Bakhtiari and running back Aaron Jones all returned but didn’t take part in team drills.

Corner Jaire Alexander, WR Adonis-Jennings, fullback Joe Kerridge, WR Randall Cobb, TE Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson all returned and took part in all drills.

The only three players that didn’t practice were WR Trevor Davis (hamstring), RB Devante Mays (hamstring) and safety Jermaine Whitehead (back).

The Packers hold their last open training camp practice of the week today (Monday).  The rest of the week is behind closed doors with the team set to play preseason game number two on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field.

Gutekunst era in Green Bay off to a flying start (AUDIO)

April 27, 2018 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

New Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst could have stayed put and safely made the Packers first round selection at number-14 overall.  After all, they still had at least a handful of solid defensive difference makers on the board at the time.  Players like Derwin James (DB-Florida State) and Tremaine Edmunds (LB-Virgina Tech) went with the 16th and 17th picks.

But Gutekunst, willing to rock the boat for the long-term good of the organization, sent the 14th overall pick to New Orleans, in exchange for the Saints number-one pick (27th) this year, the 147th pick this year (5th round) and the Saints 2019 first round draft pick.

Gutekunst said he knew when he went down to 27, that he would have a chance to get back up in the first round and that he did.  The Packers sent the 27th pick, along with third (number 76) and sixth round (number 186) picks to Seattle for the 18th pick in this draft as well as a seventh round pick (number 248) this year. Packers’ Davis arrested for making bomb joke

April 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Trevor Davis was arrested Sunday and charged with making “criminal threats” after joking about a bomb at Los Angeles International Airport.  The charge is a misdemeanor.

According to reports, the 24-year-old Davis was arrested after an attendant asked Davis some normal security questions about his luggage.  Davis then reportedly turned to his female traveling companion and asked if she remembered to pack the explosives.  He was then taken into custody and released on his own recognizance with a court appearance set for May 3.

The Packers are aware of the matter and said they are gathering information and will refrain from making any further comment as it is an ongoing legal matter.

Davis is a fifth-round draft pick in 2016 out of California.  He took over the role as the teams primary kick and punt returner.  Davis ranked third in the NFL in punt return average last season at 12 yards a return.  His long was for 65 yards against the Cleveland Browns last December.

Young receivers making their case in Packers training camp (AUDIO)

August 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Max McCaffrey works on ball drills in training camp

Every single day in Green Bay Packers training camp, a young receiver stands out, trying to make the regular season 53-man roster, or at the very least, the team’s practice squad.

Last year, undrafted rookie Geronimo Allison out of Illinois, was that player.  Allison made the teams practice squad and eventually signed to the 53-man roster in week eight.

In this training camp, the list of young and promising receivers is long.  DeAngelo Yancey, Michael Clark, Malachi DuPre, Montay Crockett and Max McCaffrey are all looking to win spots somewhere along the line, battling incumbents like Trevor Davis and Jeff Janis.

McCaffrey spent time on the Packers practice squad last season and was actually signed to the active roster for the playoff loss at Atlanta.  His brother Christian was a first round draft pick by Carolina and his father Ed played for 13 years with the Giants, 49ers and Denver Broncos.

McCaffrey has been steady in training camp but he knows there’s no one way to make it in the NFL. [Read more…]

Packers have some injury concerns heading to Atlanta

January 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

As it turns out, wide receiver Jordy Nelson isn’t the only injury concern for the Green Bay Packers as they get ready to face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game on Sunday.

Nelson is considered a longshot to play with broken ribs and Davante Adams’ status is also in question after he suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the win over the Cowboys last Sunday.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Adams isn’t expected to practice until late in the week, probably not until Saturday.

Adams caught five passes for 76 yards against the Cowboys after setting career highs with 75 catches for 997 yards and 12 touchdowns for the season. [Read more…]

For some rookies, it’s back to school

Kenny Clark getting ready for rookie orientation workout

Kenny Clark getting ready for rookie orientation workout

After spending the weekend in Green Bay at the Packers’ Rookie Orientation, first round draft pick Kenny Clark and a few of his teammates have returned to school.

NFL rule prohibits Clark, along with fellow rookies Trevor Davis and Kyle Murphy from sticking around in Green Bay.  Clark goes to UCLA, Davis goes to California and Murphy attends Stanford.  All three are quarter system and the NFL says rookies can’t take part in team activities, other than the rookie camp, until their schools are out of session in early June.

Fourth round pick, linebacker Blake Martinez from Stanford, is allowed to remain with the Packers because he has already earned his degree. [Read more…]
