Penniston reportedly looking to transfer

January 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Kyle Penniston

According to 247Sports, Wisconsin Badger tight end Kyle Penniston is considering a transfer and is in the NCAA transfer portal.

Penniston has struggled to establish himself as the pass catcher he had hoped to be.  He’s played in 39 games with 21 starts, but he’s totaled just 16 receptions for 176 yards and four touchdowns.  Penniston had just three catches for 18 yards this past season.

Penniston played as a backup for two seasons behind Troy Fumagalli and then last season behind Jake Ferguson.

Penniston will be a redshirt senior this coming fall.  He hasn’t graduated yet, but if he does so in the spring, he could transfer to another school and play immediately.

Badgers get commitment for 2019 class

February 6, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers have sent some pretty good tight ends to the NFL and that hasn’t gone unnoticed.  On Monday, 6’5, 225 pound tight end Hayden Rucci, from Warwick High School in Lititz, Pennsylvania, announced on Twitter he had given UW an oral commitment for the 2019 class.

Hayden Rucci is the eighth known commitment for the 2019 class.  He chose Wisconsin after receiving several offers, including Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana and Rutgers from the Big Ten Conference.

Troy Fumagali finished with 46 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns for the Badgers this past season.  He’s projected as one of the top tight ends in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft.

Rucci’s father, Todd Rucci, was an offensive lineman at Penn State and played seven seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots from 1993 through 1999.

Five Wisconsin football players earned A.P. All-America honors on Monday, the most since 2010 when they also had five.

Inside linebacker T.J. Edwards earned the Badgers only 1st team honor.  Running back Jonathan Taylor and TE Troy Fumagali were named to the second team and offensive lineman David Edwards (RT) and Beau Benzschawel (RG) were named to the third team.

Edwards is the first UW defensive player to earn 1st team honors by the AP since defensive end Erasmus James in 2004.  He recorded 75 tackles (11 for loss), two sacks, four interceptions and one touchdown.

Taylor (true freshman) finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting over the weekend.  He ranks third nationally with 1,847 yards rushing and has 13 touchdowns to his credit.

Fumagali finished with 43 receptions for 516 yards and four scores.

Edwards and Benzschawel both started all 13 games on the right side of the Badgers offensive line, paving the way for Taylor’s outstanding season.

Fumagali returns to practice for the Badgers

October 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

Jon Dietzen

Wisconsin senior tight end Troy Fumagali, who missed the Northwestern game with a left-leg injury, took part in the Badgers practice on Wednesday with the hopes of playing at Nebraska on Saturday night.

Fumagali leads the Badgers with 15 receptions, 236 receiving yards and is tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions with three.

Dietzen’s Injury was his toe

Left guard Jon Dietzen missed the BYU game with what was presumed to be an ankle injury.  It turns out he was sidelined with a toe injury.

Dietzen suffered the injury during the Florida Atlantic game but played through it.  He couldn’t walk too well the very next day.

After missing the BYU game, Dietzen returned to the starting lineup last week against Northwestern, splitting time with Micah Kapoi.

After a second half collapse in the Big Ten Championship game, the Wisconsin defense did a number on Western Michigan’s high-flying offense and the Badgers pulled out a 24-16 win over the Broncos in the Cotton Bowl on Monday afternoon.

The eighth ranked Badgers finished their season at 11-3, winning their third straight bowl game and second in a row under Paul Chryst.   Number-14 Western Michigan saw their perfect season come to an end, falling to 13-1.

Senior Bart Houston got the start at quarterback and completed 11 of 12 passes for 159 yards.  His only incompletion came when tight end Troy Fumagali dropped a pass in the end zone.  But Fumagali made up for it, catching six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown from Alex Hornibrook.  Fumagali was named the games most outstanding offensive player.
