Biegel out another week with the Packers

August 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

As training camp and the NFL preseason winding down, time is running out for Green Bay Packers 4th round pick, linebacker Vince Biegel to get himself ready for the start of the regular season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced Tuesday that Biegel wouldn’t practice this week and won’t play Saturday night in preseason game number three at Denver.  The former Badger hasn’t practiced since breaking a bone in his foot on the second day of the Packers’ rookie orientation in early May.

Following Saturday’s game, the Packers will have one practice next week, followed by next Thursday’s preseason finale against the Rams at Lambeau Field.

McCarthy said they want to avoid a setback with Biegel.

Injury update

Second year defensive lineman Dean Lowry was held out of practice on Tuesday with an unspecified knee injury.  Mike McCarthy said the injury is not a long term concern.

Wide receiver Malachi Dupre and defensive back Damarious Randall both return to practice after being cleared from the teams concussion protocol.

Running back  Ty Montgomery also returned to practice after sitting last week with a lower leg injury.

Packers release RB’s Michael and Jackson, pick up option on Clinton-Dix

May 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers workout last season at Ray Nitschke Field.

Just two days after drafting three running backs, the Green Bay Packers thinned out their backfield with the release of veteran Christine Michael and Don Jackson. Monday’s move leaves converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery as the only running back currently under contract, and reiterates General Manager Ted Thompson’s assertion over the weekend that Montgomery is “absolutely…our starting running back.”

Michael was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks during last season, and went on to play nine games for Green Bay. After rushing for 172 yards and one touchdown on 47 carries, the Packers re-signed Michael in March for $800,000. Jackson, an 2016 undrafted free agent, worked his way from the practice squad to the active roster, but was eventually placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

What’s left is Montgomery, a second-year back, and three rookie draft picks: BYU’s Jamaal Williams in the fourth round, Aaron Jones of UTEP in the fifth, and Utah State’s Devante Mays in the seventh.

Green Bay also announced Monday they have picked up the fifth-year option on safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The 2014 draft pick made his first Pro Bowl in 2016 after posting a career-best five interceptions. Clinton-Dix, who has never missed a game and played every defensive snap last season, is scheduled to make $1.5-million in 2017 and $5.9-million in 2018.

Packers looking for running back depth (AUDIO)

March 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Ted Thompson

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson admitted to reporters on Monday that they need to add to their running back depth chart, but he wasn’t willing to say if they had any interest in free agent Adrian Peterson.

“Let’s all together answer that question,” Thompson said while addressing reporters at the NFL Owners spring meetings in Phoenix.  “We don’t talk about players that are not on our team.  We never have, we never will.  It doesn’t serve a purpose, I don’t think.”

After losing starter Eddie Lacy in free agency to Seattle, the Packers have just three running backs under contract on their roster.  Don Jackson and Christine Michael were both re-signed and converted receiver Ty Montgomery is under contract. [Read more…]

Michael returning to Packers

March 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Running back Christian Michael is returning to the Green Bay Packers.  Although the Packers didn’t announce an agreement, ESPN.com is reporting that it’s a done deal.

Michael’s return gives the Packers three halfbacks heading into next months NFL Draft.  He is joined by Ty Montgomery and Don Jackson.

The Packers are expected to add to that group in the draft, as well as signing an undrafted free agent or two to compete for a roster spot.

Michael played in nine games with the Packers, including three playoff games.  He totaled 47 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown.

The Packers lost Eddie Lacy in free agency after he signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

Eddie Lacy headed for Seattle

March 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Eddie Lacy

Eddie Lacy’s four year run in Green Bay ended today when the former Alabama running back agreed to a 1-year free agent contract worth a reported $5.5 million with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Packers said they were interested in bringing Lacy back for another season, but just like with other players, it was going to be at their price.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Lacy’s weighed 267 pounds for one of the three teams he visited during free agency.  The Packers were one of the three, with Seattle and Minnesota being the others. [Read more…]

Packers release RB James Starks

February 7, 2017 By Bill Scott

James Starks

The Green Bay Packers parted company with veteran running back James Starks on Tuesday.

Starks was a sixth-round pick in 2010 and started as a rookie in Super bowl XLV, but he rushed for just 145 yards and averaged just 2.3 yards per carry in nine games last season.

Starks didn’t clear the concussion protocol and missed the NFC Championship game loss in Atlanta.  Starks also missed four games earlier in the season with a knee injury.

The Packers had signed Starks to a two-year, $6 million contract prior to the start of last season. [Read more…]

Crosby’s late heroics lead Packers past Cowboys

January 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mason Crosby

Mason Crosby booted a pair of 50+ yard field goals in the final minutes, helping the Green Bay Packers hold off the Dallas Cowboys 34-31 in the NFC Divisional playoffs on Sunday.

The Packers (12-6) went into the game as 5 1/2 point underdogs and came out of AT&T Stadium with their 8th straight victory.

The Packers won for the second time in this postseason, something that’s happened only one other time under Mike McCarthy.  They had lost on the final play five times in the last seven years.

Cowboys rookie quarterback Dak Prescott finished with a passer rating of 103.2, throwing three touchdown passes and one interception.  Fellow rookie Ezekiel Elliott rushed 22 times for 125 yards, but couldn’t bust a long one or reach the end zone. [Read more…]

Packers run the table, win NFC North (AUDIO)

January 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers following the Packers 31-24 win over Detroit.

It was six-plus weeks ago that Aaron Rodgers told reporters around his locker that he thought the Green Bay Packers could run the table and win their final six games.

Sunday night, that forecast became reality as the Packers knocked off the Detroit Lions 31-24 at Ford Field, winning six straight games and winning the NFC North Division title.

The Packers made the playoffs for the eighth straight season and will host the New York Giants on Sunday (3:40 p.m.) in a NFC Wildcard playoff game at Lambeau Field.  It was the Packers’ fifth division title in the last six years.  The Lions, who haven’t won a division crown since 1993, made the playoffs as a wildcard team.  They will take a three-game losing streak to Seattle to face the Seahawks on Saturday night. Wild finish gives Packers a key victory (AUDIO)

December 19, 2016 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

Aaron Rodgers didn’t throw a touchdown pass and Jordy Nelson didn’t have a touchdown catch, but the two connected for a 60-yard pass play in the final minute, which led Mason Crosby’s 32-yard game winning field goal to give the Green Bay Packers a 30-27 victory over the Bears in Chicago.

Rodgers long strike came on a 3rd and 11 play and the Packers had no timeouts.  So Rodgers hustled his team up to the line of scrimmage, just in time to spike the ball, stop the clock and give Crosby time to get the winning kick off.

For the first time since 1933, the series is tied.  The Packers victory drew the two teams even at 94-wins apiece with six ties. [Read more…]

Packers’ Starks sidelined after car accident

December 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

James Starks

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks was added to the injury list this week with a concussion.  It turns out that injury didn’t take place on the field.

Starks was involved in a car accident on Monday.  Coach Mike McCarthy said other than the concussion, Starks was OK but didn’t provide any more details.

Starks has accumulated just four yards on six carries over the last two games.  If he can’t play Sunday, it would leave the Packers with Ty Montgomery and Christine Michael as their primary ball carriers.

Montgomery’s nine-carries last week was a season high.  He’s averaging 5.2  yards a carry.  Michael has 59 yards on 20 carries in three games since signing with the Packers.

Mike McCarthy was asked if Montgomery could handle a 20-carry workload today.  McCarthy said, “We’ll see how it goes this week, but, yes, I have confidence he can get to that number if he had to.”
