Brewers send Segura to the desert

January 31, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers sent their starting shortstop, former NL All-Star Jean Segura to the Arizona Diamondbacks as a part of a five-player deal on Saturday.

The Diamondbacks also picked up right-handed pitcher Tyler Wagner in the deal for right handed pitcher Chase Anderson, infielder Aaron Hill, minor league shortstop Isan Diaz and cash.

Arizona made Anderson available after signing free agent Zach Greinke and trading for All-Star pitcher Shelby Miller.

The Diamondbacks were looking for a little more offense, despite ranking second in the National League in scoring last season. [Read more…]

Cubs still in chase to host Wild Card game

October 4, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoKyle Hendricks stopped the Milwaukee Brewers on one hit in the first six innings as the Chicago Cubs won Saturday’s game 1-0.

Paired with a Pittsburgh loss to Cincinnati, the Cubs still have a slim chance to host the Wild Card game against the Pirates.  The Cubs have won seven straight games.

Milwaukee didn’t have a base runner until Martin Maldonado singled with one out in the sixth inning.  Hendricks (8-7) picked up his eighth win and Hector Rondon earned his 30th save.

Cubs rookie shortstop Addison Russell drove in the game’s only run in the second.

Brewers rookie starter Tyler Wagner (0-2) was effective for the Brewers, allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings.

Dan Haren (10-9, 3.67) pitches for the Cubs today, while the Brewers’ Jorge Lopez (1-0, 5.40) makes the second start of his Major League career.

Do what you have to do to win the game today and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.  That is the situation the Milwaukee Brewers found themselves in on Sunday in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

The Brewers and Diamondbacks played the longest game (in terms of time) in Miller Park history and knocked off the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 in 17 innings.  Martin Maldonado, who caught all 17-innings, clubbed a one-out home run to allow the Brewers to walk off a winner.

The game went 5-hours and 49 minutes and the Brewers needed nine pitchers to help snap their seven-game losing streak. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers announced Friday that right-hander Tyler Wagner would be recalled from the teams double-A affiliate in Biloxi, Mississippi, and start in Sunday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

Wagner was a fourth-round draft choice out of the University of Utah in 2012, will take the place of Wily Peralta, who will miss four to six weeks with an oblique strain.

The 6’3, 195-pound Wagner was 5-1 with a 2.01 earned-run average in nine starts.

The last pitcher to make the jump from Class AA and start a game for the Brewers was Tyler Thornburg, who is currently pitching at Class AAA Colorado Springs.

The Timber Rattlers will return just six players from last year’s championship team, most of them weren’t starting position players.  The only player who somewhat qualifies is center fielder and 2012 1st round draft pick Mitch Haniger.  Haniger played in 14 games last season before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
