Badger women’s soccer team falls in NCAA Sweet 16

November 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

The 10th ranked Wisconsin women’s soccer team saw its 2019 season come to a close in the NCAA Sweet 16, falling to 7th ranked UCLA 2-0 on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

The 2019 Big Ten Champion Badgers (16-4-2) held the Bruins off the scoreboard in the first half, but the Bruins scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half.

Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year Jordyn Bloomer made a career high seven saves in the loss.

This marked the second-straight year the Badgers reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament, marking the first time in school history UW reached the round of 16 in consecutive years.

Wisconsin closes out the 2019 season with 16 wins, which is the third-most wins in school history.  UW’s winning percentage of .773 is also a top-10 mark in school history.

August 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

University of Wisconsin officials announced the Badgers and UCLA have agreed to meet in a home and home series, but college football fans on both sides will have to wait until 2029 and 2030 to see it.

Wisconsin is scheduled to face UCLA in Pasadena, California on Sept. 15, 2029.  The Bruins will make the trip to Madison on Sept. 7, 2030.

Former Bucks star, Dave Meyers loses battle with cancer

October 10, 2015 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Bucks logo 11Former Milwaukee Bucks forward Dave Meyers lost his battle with cancer and passed away at his home in Temecula, California on Friday.

Meyers starred at UCLA, leading  the Bruins to the 1975 NCAA basketball championship.

Meyers was drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers but was sent to Milwaukee in a deal that brought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Los Angeles.

In his final season at UCLA, Meyers averaged 18.3 points and 7.9 rebounds a game, helping the Bruins to a 28-3 record.  He had 24 points and 11 rebounds in their 92-85 win over Kentucky in the NCAA title game.

In 1975, Meyers, along with Elmore Smith, Junior Bridgeman and Brian Winters, was traded to Milwaukee for Abdul-Jabbar and Walt Wesley.

After four years with the Bucks, Meyers made a surprise announcement in 1980, saying he was retiring from basketball to spend more time with his family.  He became a teacher and taught sixth grade for several years at Lake Elsinore, California.

After one season at UCLA, Kevon Looney is headed for the NBA.  The University made the announcement on Monday.

The former Milwaukee Hamilton High School star averaged 11.6 points and a team-high 9.2 rebounds as a freshman at UCLA this past season.  His 15 double-doubles were tops among freshmen nationally.  He earned second-team all-Pac-12 honors.

“This was a really tough decision for me because there were so many positives both ways,” Looney said.  “My time at UCLA has been unbelievable, and I know I’ll be a Bruin forever.  But playing in the NBA is a dream I’ve had for so long, and this feels like the right time to pursue that dream.”

Packers GM Ted Thompson spent day two of the draft moving down to accumulate picks.  Day three, they used some of those picks to move up for a 3rd fourth round selection.

The Packers sent a 5th round pick (#146) and a  6th round pick (#173) to the Denver Broncos to grab pick #125 in the 4th round.  With that selection, the Packers took UCLA RB Jonathan Franklin.  He is the second running back the Packers selected in this draft (Eddie Lacy) and its the fourth offensive player out of their five picks.

Franklin has seen action in all four years at UCLA.  As a red-shirt freshman in 2009, he started the teams first 8-games playing in all 13 leading the team in rushing yards with 566-yards.  In 2010, Franklin was the schools offensive MVP and received 2nd team all-conference honors.  Franklin racked up over 1100-yards with 8-scores as a Sophomore.  In 2011, Franklin played in all 14-games but his production dropped a bit.  He put up 976-yards and 5-scores.

2012 put Franklin on the map.  He racked up 1,734-yards on the ground, a school record, while adding 323-reciving yards.  His 2,062 all-purpose yards set also set a school record.  Franklin’s efforts made him a Doak Walker Award (Nations best running back) finalist and a Maxwell Award (Collegiate Player of the Year) semifinalist.

He leaves UCLA as the schools all-time leading rusher (4,403) and career leader in all-purpose yards (4,936).  His rushing total was also the 5th highest in Pac-12 history.

The Packers still have 6-more selections before the draft ends.
