SentryWorld to host 2023 U.S. Senior Open Championship

February 10, 2021 By Bill Scott

The United States Golf Association (USGA) on Wednesday announced SentryWorld, in Stevens Point, Wis., will host the 43rd U.S. Senior Open Championship from June 29-July 2, 2023.

The Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course played host to its first USGA championship in 1986, playing host to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links final.

The USGA returned to SentryWorld in 2019 with the playing of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

“In hosting the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in 2019, we set out to earn the right to land other major golf championships and we’re thrilled that we could do just that,” said Mike James, general manager of SentryWorld and vice president of Sentry Services.  “The U.S. Senior Open is undoubtedly among the most prestigious golf events in the world.  With the help of state and local leaders and business and community partners, SentryWorld will provide a world-class experience and environment for players, officials and fans alike.”

The 2023 U.S. Senior Open will be the 17th USGA championship held in Wisconsin.  In 2022, Erin Hills, in Erin, and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, will host the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship from Sept. 10-15. [Read more…]

SentryWorld to host 71st Girls Junior Championship in 2019

December 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, has been selected by the USGA as the host site for the 71st U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.  SentryWorld will host its second USGA championship July 22-27, 2019.

The 7,237-yard championship golf course is designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

SentryWorld hosted the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, which was won by Cindy Schreyer and holds the entry record (1,085) for that USGA championship, which was conducted annually from 1977-2014.

The 2018 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship will be contested July 16-21 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.

This will be the 15th USGA championship conducted in Wisconsin, and the first since the 2017 U.S. Open won by Brooks Koepka at Erin Hills.

Practice continues at Erin Hills with the U.S. Open to start Thursday

The world’s best golfers continue to get their practice rounds in as they prepare for the start of the U.S. Open on Thursday at Erin Hills.

The players love the course but not everything about the course.  The players that feel that way, have no doubt had an experience with the thick fescue that lines the fairways.

The fairways are generous in their width, which helps.  But if the pro’s miss, they’re in for some trouble.

Kevin Na posted a video on Instagram Sunday.  He tossed a ball into the thick grass, took a pair of swings before losing the ball entirely.  The airways are generally about 50% wider then most U.S. Open venues.  So players will be rewarded for driving it straight.  If they don’t, the penalty could prove difficult.

USGA officials will also have to keep an eye on the skies.  There is rain in the forecast for the week.  Wednesday and Saturday appear to be the two biggest threats, but there’s pop-up shower chances throughout the tournament.

A number of top golfers are scheduled to meet with reporters today to talk further about the course and their game, heading into the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Erin Hills tested me, will it test the pros?

May 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

As the 117th U.S. Open Championship at Erin Hills approaches, the question remains; Will the winds be blowing when the world’s best players arrive?

There is no definitive answer to that question.  The U.S. Open is set for June 15-18, less than a month away.  The course will be one of the longest ever in a major championship at 7,693 yards.

USGA officials expect the winds to blow, it’s one of the traits of the property.  But if it rains and the winds don’t blow, the pro’s could have a field day.

“If there’s no wind for four days, that would be highly unusual, but they’ll definitely shoot lower scores,” said USGA Executive Director Mike Davis.  “If it’s softer they’re going to shoot lower scores.  The greens are so good they’re going to make putts. [Read more…]
