Horizon League Hoops Roundup

Horizon League LogoIn Green Bay, senior guard Carrington Love led five Green Bay Phoenix scorers in double figures by putting up 39 points in a 107-90 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.

The Phoenix trailed by 18 points at one point in the game, but they dominated the second half.  Love scored 25 of his 39 after intermission, hitting a career-high eight 3-pointers.

The Phoenix improved to 17-11, including 9-6 in Horizon League play.

Panthers blow out Cleveland State

The Milwaukee Panthers had a 52-18 lead at halftime and went on to blowout Cleveland State 88-54 in Milwaukee.

The Green Bay Phoenix had just played five-straight road games and ten of their last 12 away from the Resch Center, and the Milwaukee Panthers were wrapping up a five-game road trip, facing their rivals on Monday night.

The two teams were clearly road weary and their offense came in spurts.  In the end, the Phoenix played the cleaner game and held off the Panthers 70-68 to move into 4th place in the Horizon League, in front of the Panthers.  The Phoenix evened the season series with the two games being decided by a total of three points.

The Panthers had a couple of chances at the end of the game, with the Phoenix leading by two.  Brock Stull and Austin Arians missed three-pointers in the final eight seconds. [Read more…]

Horizon League LogoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers blew an 11-point lead with just under eleven minutes to play and fell to Northern Kentucky 75-71.

J.J. Panoske hit a three-pointer to give the Panthers (15-9, 6-5 HL) a 60-49 second half lead.  The Norse (9-14, 6-7 HL) outscored the Panthers 26-11 the rest of the way.

Panoske had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers.

Green Bay falls at Wright State

Wright State jumped out to a big lead early and went on to beat the Green Bay Phoenix 79-60 at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday.

The Phoenix turned it over ten times in the first ten minutes and a season high 18 times in the game. [Read more…]

Panthers capture Cable Car Classic

Milwaukee Panthers logoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers (3-0) got into early foul trouble and trailed Santa Clara by six-points at halftime.  They rebounded in the second half, going on a 21-5 run to pull out a 71-65 win over the Broncos to win the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, California.

The Broncos committed 19 fouls in the second half and the Panthers turned that into 19 free throws.

Akeem Springs had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers.  Austin Arians added 14 points and JJ Panoske added 10 points in the win for the Panthers.

Milwaukee continues its road trip on Tuesday night when they face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend on Tuesday night.

Panthers win season opener

Milwaukee Panthers logoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to break open a close game and went on to beat Denver 71-58 in the opening round of the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, California.

It’s the Panthers first season opening win since the 2012-’13 season.

Austin Arians scored 20 points to lead the Panthers.  He finished six of 14 from three-point range.  Matt Tiby went 12 for 13 from the free throw line and added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers.

The Panthers hit 20 of 21 from the free throw line for the game.

Milwaukee faces Lipscomb tonight (Saturday) at 7:30.

Wisconsin starts Big Ten hoops slate at home

The Big Ten released it’s 2015-16 men’s basketball schedule on Thursday.  It has the Wisconsin Badgers playing three of their first four games at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin opens league play Dec. 29th against Purdue, a team that finished third in the Big Ten last season at 12-6.

Rutgers visits the Kohl Center on January 2.  The Scarlet Knights gave the Badgers one of their two league losses a year ago but finished 2-16 in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin then travels to Indiana to face the Hoosiers in January 5.  The two teams will play in Madison on January 26.

Then Maryland comes to Madison on January 9.  The Terrapins are expected to be the favorites to win the Big Ten Conference this season. [Read more…]

Panthers fire first no-hitter

Milwaukee Panthers logoFreshman Alex McIntosh and senior Mike Schneider combined to throw the first no-hitter in UW-Milwaukee’s program history on Tuesday, 7-0 over UW-Superior at Henry Aaron Field.

McIntosh (from Hortonville) worked the first seven innings and struck out 11 hitters.  He didn’t find out he was going to pitch until about 25-minutes before the game.

Schneider pitched the final two innings for the Panthers, in his first appearance since the end of the 2013 season.  Schneider missed all of 2014 after Tommy John surgery.

McIntosh improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Panthers are 15-9 on the year.

UWM Panthers blown out by Valparaiso

Milwaukee Panthers logoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers fell behind 19-3 and were never in the game, falling to Valparaiso 73-48 in Indiana on Monday night.

The Panthers (7-14, 2-5 Horizon League), hit just 1 of 17 from beyond the three-point arc.

Valparaiso (19-4, 6-2) led 39-16 at halftime.

Crusaders sophomore Alec Peters scored 24 points in 24 minutes of playing time, hitting 10 of 14 from the field.  Peters and the rest of his teammates shot 56% from the field for the game as they climbed to within a half game of the first place Green Bay Phoenix in Horizon League play.

Matt Tiby had 15 points, scoring in double digits in each of his last 12 games.  That matches the longest stretch of his career.

Panthers remain winless on the road – HL Update

Milwaukee Panthers logoThe UW-Milwaukee Panthers got a season-high 15 points from J.J. Panoske but fell to Oakland, 66-53 in Horizon League action in Rochester, Michigan on Thursday night.

The Panthers (7-13, 2-4 HL) saw their 2-game win streak come to an end.  They fell to 0-9 on the road this season.

The Golden Grizzlies (8-12, 3-2) were led by Kahlil Felder and Corey Petros, who scored 18 points each.

Oakland trailed 29-28 at halftime, then shot 61.5% in the second half to take control.

Matt Tiby added 13 points and seven rebounds for UWM.  He has now reached 10 or more points in 11 straight games.

Milwaukee is now 8-2 all time against Oakland.  They swept both games last season. [Read more…]

Sykes leads Green Bay past Milwaukee

Senior guard Keifer Sykes scored 22 of his career-high 34 points in the first half as the Green Bay Phoenix (13-3, 2-0 HL) built a 20-point lead at halftime and cruised to a 79-63 win over the Milwaukee Panthers in Horizon League play Friday night at UWM Panther Arena.

Sykes hit 13 of 20 shots on the night, including 5 of 7 from three-point range.  It matched the 34 points he scored against the Panthers in a 93-86 overtime victory on Jan. 12, 2014 in Milwaukee.

Green Bay shot 56.7% from the field (17-30) in the first half.  Milwaukee hit just 34.8% (8-23).

Greg Mays finished with a double-double for the Phoenix (16 points and 11 rebounds), and junior Carrington Love added 15 points for Green Bay.  The Phoenix also got eight points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals from junior Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.).

The Panthers (5-12, 0-3) dropped their sixth in a row.  They were led by Steve McWhorter’s 21 points and Akeem Springs 18 points.

Green Bay returns home to host Youngstown State on Sunday evening (7pm) at the Resch Center.
