Badgers fall on buzzer beater in overtime (AUDIO)

For the second straight season, the Wisconsin’s NCAA Tournament run ended in the Sweet 16.  Florida guard Chris Chiozza hit a floating three-pointer to send the Gators to a 84-83 overtime victory over Badgers.

Wisconsin jumped out to a fast start, then blew a 11-point lead and trailing going into halftime.

In the second half, the Badgers erased an eight-point deficit in the final 2:54 and forced overtime when Zak Showalter hit a game-tying three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left.

The Badgers jumped out quickly in overtime before Chiozza’s late heroics send the Badgers and the Big Ten home.

Nigel Hayes scored 22 points to lead Wisconsin, but he missed 7 of 14 free-throw attempts.  Ethan Happ [Read more…]

Late rally pushes Badgers into “Sweet 16” (AUDIO)

The 8th-seeded Wisconsin Badgers are headed back to the “Sweet 16”, coming from behind to knock off Villanova 65-62 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo.

The Badgers trailed 57-50 with just over five minutes left.  Villanova would score just one field goal and five total points the rest of the way as the Badgers tightened up their defense down the stretch.

The Badgers pulled out the win despite guard Bronson Koenig’s second half foul trouble.  He returned with more than five minutes left and helped lead the comeback.  Koenig finished hitting 3 of 6 three-pointers and scored 17 points.  Two of his three-pointers tied the game at 57-all and gave the Badgers a 62-59 lead with 1:58 to play.

Nigel Hayes hit the game winner on a baseline drive and left-handed reverse layup.  He led the Badgers in scoring with 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. [Read more…]

Happ headlines Big Ten season honors

Five members of the Wisconsin men’s basketball team received season-ending awards from the Big Ten Conference on Monday, led by Ethan Happ, who earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition.

Happ joins Michael Finley (1993) as the only Wisconsin players to earn first-team honors in their sophomore season.

Happ, who was a first-team All-Big Ten pick by both the coaches and the media, was also named to the league’s all-defensive team for the second straight season.  He led the Big Ten in steals during conference play (2.3 per game) and leads UW with 38 blocks on the year.

Bronson Koenig earned second-team All-Big Ten praise from the coaches and third-team All-Big Ten selection from the media.  Nigel Hayes was  tabbed with third-team All-Big Ten honors. [Read more…]

Badgers fall to Michigan, Seniors need to step up (AUDIO)

Playing without senior point guard Bronson Koenig (left calf injury), the 10th ranked Wisconsin Badgers lost their second consecutive game, falling 64-58 to the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Ethan Happ finished with 22 points on 10 of 13 shooting, but 18 of the 22 came in the first half.  The Badgers committed crucial turnovers and missed shots down the stretch as they fell into a first place tie with Maryland and Purdue atop the Big Ten Conference, all with 10-3 league records.

The Badgers (21-5, 10-3) will host Maryland (22-4, 10-3) on Sunday at the Kohl Center.  Purdue (21-5, 10-3) will host Michigan State on Saturday. [Read more…]

Badgers roll past Penn State to stay atop the Big Ten

After leading by just three points at halftime, an upset Greg Gard let his Wisconsin team know what he thought about their play.  The Badgers turned things around in the second half and rolled to a 82-55 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers won their 18th straight game at the Kohl Center and 18th straight over Penn State in Madison (15-0 at the Kohl Center).

Bronson Koenig hit 4 of 9  three-pointers and 8 of 13 shots overall, finishing with 20 points.  Vitto Brown added 16 points and six rebounds.

Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, Ethan Happ, finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Penn State started the night last in the Big Ten in shooting (40.9%) and 11th in three-point shooting (34.4%).  The Nittany Lions made 6 of 10 three-pointers (60%) and 12 of 23 shots (52.2%) in the first half.  The finished 50% (9 of 18) and 38.8% (38.8%) for the game.

The Badgers remain tied with Maryland for first place in the Big Ten at 6-1.  They’ll face Rutgers on Saturday.

Badgers comeback to beat Michigan

With the Badgers down, guard Bronson Koenig responded with a 10-point run in the second half, two driving baskets and two three-pointers to lead 17th ranked Wisconsin to a 68-64 win over the Michigan Wolverines at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (15-3, 4-1 Big Ten) moved back into a first-place tie with Maryland (16-2, 4-1).  The Terrapins had the night off and will play next at Iowa on Thursday.

John Beilein’s struggles against Wisconsin continued.  The Wolverines (12-7, 2-4) are now 2-16 against the Badgers.

Koenig finished with 16 points to lead the Badgers.  Vitto Brown and Nigel Hayes added 13 points each.  Ethan Happ had 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Zak Irvin scored 21 points to lead the Wolverines.

The Badgers return to action on Saturday against the Minnesota Gophers in the Twin Cities.

Badgers fall to North Carolina in Maui

Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and Joel Berry II poured in 22 points to lead number-four North Carolina to a 71-56 win over the 16th ranked Wisconsin Badgers in the championship game of the Maui Invitational.

The Tar Heels (7-0) held the Badgers to 38-percent shooting.  Wisconsin guard Bronson Koenig was held to just one-for-13 from the field.

Badgers bench comes to the rescue in win over Chicago State

A sloppy start for the Wisconsin Badgers saw head coach Greg Gard go to his bench early.  The result, a 69-64 victory over Chicago State at the Kohl Center.

Ethan Happ, Vitto Brown and Zack Showalter were all pulled from the game in the first two minutes and the bench led the Badgers to victory.  Wisconsin’s reserves scored 18 of the Badgers 32 first-half points.  The reserves finished with 36 points, 23 rebounds and 11 assists.

Sophomore Khalil Iverson led that reserve group with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block.

Freshman guard D’Mitrik Trice had seven assists in 23 minutes to help run the show off the bench. [Read more…]

Badgers struggle on offense, advance to NCAA’s second round

The Wisconsin Badgers couldn’t throw one in the ocean early on yesterday, but Greg Gard’s team didn’t panick.

The Badgers fell behind 12-3, by the second media timeout.  The Badgers started 1 for 10 from the field, but they still managed to come from behind to pull out a 47-43 win over the St. Louis Blues.

The Badgers (21-12) won for the 12th time in the last 15 games and advanced to the second round of the East Regional on Sunday against Xavier.  Pittsburgh finished the season with a 21-12 record, the same record that the Badgers have, but they’re moving on.

Ethan Happ scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half, but the Badgers hit just 17 of 53 from the field (32.1%) and 4 of 19 from three-point range (21.1%).  Nigel Hayes added 12 points and Vitto Brown 11 points.  He hit 3 of five three-point shots.

The Panthers built a 22-16 lead at the halftime break, but the Badgers started their comeback in the second half and went right down to the wire with the Panthers.

The Badgers will face Xavier in the second round of the tournament on Sunday.  The Musketeers pulled out a 71-53 win over 15th seeded Weber State.

Hayes & Happ honored by Big Ten

Wisconsin redshirt freshman Ethan Happ has been recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and forward Nigel Hayes has been named to the All-Big Ten first team, as the Big Ten Conference handed out its season-ending awards Monday night.

Happ was selected by both the coaches and the media as the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.  He was also a unanimous selection by coaches to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and was named to the league’s all-defensive team.  The forward from Milan, Illinois, was also recognized as a third team all-Big Ten honoree by the media and drew honorable mention recognition from the coaches.
