The Minnesota Gophers played once again without three of their top players, after they were suspended for the remainder of the season.  The Wisconsin Badgers jumped out early, built a comfortable lead and cruised to a 62-49 victory at Williams Arena.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said his team played OK, and he would have liked to see more efficiency on offense.

What he got was pretty good balance from his team, with six players scoring at least six points as the Badgers (20-10, 12-5), won for the 11th time in the last 12 games and are tied with Michigan State (25-5, 12-5) for second place in the Big Ten with one game left to play.

Wisconsin will face one more road game on Sunday, at Purdue (23-7, 11-6).  But the victory over the Gophers assured the Badgers of a top four finish for the 15th straight season.

Bronson Koenig had 14 points (12 in the 1st half) to lead the Badgers.  Vitto Brown added 12 points, Zak Showalter had eight points and Nigel Hayes added six points and seven rebounds. [Read more…]

Against Iowa, the Badger bench came through with 24 points, outscoring the Hawkeyes 24-to-three.  Last night, the Badgers got 65 of their 68 points from starters.

The Badgers (19-10, 11-5 Big Ten) won for the 10th time in 11 games.  Michigan (20-10, 10-7), who is fighting for an NCAA at-large berth, lost for the third time in four games. [Read more…]

Badgers second half comeback beats Illinois

February 22, 2016 By Bill Scott

Motion WAfter an ugly first half and a shaky start to the second, the Wisconsin Badgers put things together and pulled out a 69-60 win over Illinois, sweeping the two-game season series from the Illini.

The Badgers trailed by 13-points in the second half before going on a 17-0 run to take the lead and a 36-14 overall run to post their eighth win in the last nine games.  It was the biggest comeback for the Badgers since they came from 15-points down against number-one Ohio State in February of 2011.

The Badgers (17-10, 9-5 Big Ten) moved into a tie for fifth place with Michigan State as they continue to make a push for the NCAA Tournament.  The Badgers also moved a half game in front of both Purdue and Michigan in the Big Ten standings.

Joe Lunardi’s latest bracketology has the Badgers as an eight-seed in the West Region.

Ethan Happ was the only constant for the Badgers and kept them in the game.  He hit five-of-seven from the field and 10 of 14 from the free throw line to finish with 20 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. [Read more…]

Everybody’s accountable except for Big Ten Officials

February 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Big Ten LogoMaryland has suspended freshman center Diamond Stone one game for his actions against Wisconsin‘s Vitto Brown last Saturday.

The athletic directors, coaches and even players have shared apologies and the Big Ten Conference has reprimanded Stone for his actions.

The Big Ten did what it normally does, get the last word.  The conference issued a press release that says at the end, “The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.”

What the Big Ten didn’t do is reprimand its officiating crew for not ejecting Stone from the game in the [Read more…]

February 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Motion WMaryland has suspended freshman center Diamond Stone one game on Monday for an incident late in the first half of its 70-57 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night in College Park, Maryland.

Stone shoved Badgers junior forward Vitto Brown’s head to the floor after the two scrambled for a rebound with 1.8 seconds left in the half.  Officials went to replay before assessing a contact technical foul to Stone and a technical foul to Badger forward Charlie Thomas, who came to Brown’s defense.

At least for now, the Wisconsin Badgers shouldn’t have to worry about being on Joe Lunardi’s bubble.  Junior center Vitto Brown scored a career high 21 points to lead for Badgers in double figures in a 70-57 win over second-ranked Maryland in College Park.

Wisconsin not only won their seventh straight game, but they ended Maryland’s 27-game home court win streak, quieting the 17,950 fans at the Xfinity Center.

Wisconsin build a 15-point halftime lead and never let the Terrapins closer than six points in the second half.  The Badgers (16-9, 8-4 Big Ten) moved into sole possession of fifth place in the 14-team Big Ten Conference.  They trail fourth place Michigan (19-7, 9-4) by a half game. [Read more…]

The Nebraska Cornhuskers used a 2-3 zone defense against the Wisconsin, trying to keep the Badgers from dominating the lane.  But after a slow start, the Badgers got their outside game going again, hitting 11 of 18 from three-point distance for the game and pulling out a 72-61 win over the Cornhuskers.

Five players hit at least one three-pointer for the Badgers, who finished 61.1% from three-point range for the game.

The Badgers (15-9, 5-7) didn’t have their “A” game, but they did find ways to win, which is what coach Greg Gard says good teams do. [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers ran their win streak to five games on Thursday night, knocking off Ohio State 79-68 at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers entered the game shooting 32.0% from three-point range in Big Ten play.  Last night, the Badgers hit 13 of 27 (48.1%) to help the Badgers pull out the win.  The long distance accuracy helped after the Badgers made just 10 of 17 at the free throw line.

The Badgers (14-9, 6-4 Big Ten) moved into sixth place in the Big Ten, tied with Michigan State (19-4, 6-4).  Ohio State fell to 6-5 in league play and 14-10 overall.

Six different Badger players hit at least one three pointer.  Yet coach Greg Gard told his team at halftime they were taking too many three’s and not touching the paint enough.

Nigel Hayes had just three points at halftime on one-of-seven shooting from the field.  Hayes got hot in the second half and finished with 21 points.

Marquette grabs bragging rights from the Badgers

December 13, 2015 By Bill Scott

MarquetteGoldenEagles2Wisconsin still leads the all-time series, but for now, the Marquette Golden Eagles have grabbed bragging rights with a 57-55 win over the Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center on Saturday.

Henry Ellenson had 15 points and eleven rebounds and Luke Fischer had 12 points and scored a put-back basket with 27 seconds left to help Marquette hold off a late Wisconsin rally.

The Badgers won the rebound battle, but after the Badgers fouled Haanif Cheatham who missed the front end of the bonus and the 6’11 Fischer pulled down the offensive rebound to avoid giving the Badgers any kind of last second game winning shot attempt. [Read more…]
