Steger leads after two rounds of the State Open

Mount Pleasant native Kaylor Steger shot his second straight 4-under par 66 on Tuesday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the
Wisconsin State Open at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.

Brookfield’s Harrison Ott is two shots back, while Thomas Longbella is three back.  Beaver Dam’s Dan Woltman, who is the two time defending champion, is five shots off the lead.

The 24-year-old Steger captured the 2014 WIAA Division 1 state golf championship as a senior at Oak Creek High School.

The 36-hole finale is on tap on Wednesday.

Woltman captures third State Open title

Beaver Dam’s Dan Woltman fired a final round three-under-par 67 to capture the Wisconsin State Open golf title at North Shore Golf Club in Menasha on Wednesday.

Woltman finished five-shots in front of Garrett Loomis from River Falls.  It’s the third state title for Woltman, who also captured titles in 2009 and 2011.

Woltman started the final round trailing Milwaukee amateur Jack Schultz by one stroke, but he quickly birdied three of his first four holes to pull out the win.

Appleton’s Zach Burry fired a 66 for the low round of the day.  He finished tied for sixth.

Woltman played collegiately at Wisconsin and graduated in 2009.  He holds the school record for season and career scoring and became the first UW golfer to qualify for back-to-back NCAA Championships.

Hosking captures Wisconsin State Open

Madison’s Max Hosking shot rounds of 67 and 72 on Wednesday to capture the Wisconsin State Open by one shot over Phillip Johnson of Colgate at North Shore Country Club in Mequon.

Hosking collects the top prize of $10,000 with the win.

The 21-year-old Johnson took a 1-shot lead to the final round but finished with a 74 to fall just short.

Former Badger Garrett Jones had the lead after the first 36 holes but finished two shots back, along with Matthew Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls.

Jones leads Wisconsin State Open at midway point

Madison’s Garrett Jones, takes a one-shot lead into the final 36-holes of the Wisconsin State Open at North Shore Country Club in Mequon today.  Jones fired a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday to move atop the leader board, one shot ahead of amateur Phillip Johnson of Colgate.

Teaching professional David Roesch of Germantown and Kaylor Steger of Mount Pleasant are both at 141, just two shots off the lead, heading to the final day on Wednesday.  Roesch won the State Open in 2004.

Defending champion Jordan Elsen, shot a 69 and moved into a tie for ninth at even-par 143.

There’s $10,000 on the line for today’s winner.

Woltman leads State Open

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFormer Wisconsin Badger Daniel Woltman shot a 7-under-par 65 on Tuesday and takes a two-shot lead into the final round of the Wisconsin State Open at Blackwolf Run on Wednesday.

The Beaver Dam native is at 10-under par 134 after the first two rounds and up two shots on Menasha’s Ryan Helminen and Kenosha native Jordan Elsen.

Helminen, who recently competed in the PGA Championship, shot a second round 66.  Elsen, who also starred at Wisconsin, shot a 65.

Former Wisconsin golf coach Jim Schuman, who won this event twice previously, shot a 70 and is three shots back, tied with former Wisconsin Assistant Golf Professional Association player of the year Jim Steffes.

Helminen wins second State Open

Menasha’s Ryan Helminen eagles the 17th hole at the Bull at Pinehurst Farms yesterday and went on to win the 94th Wisconsin State Open.

Helminen fired a 5-under par 67 in yesterday’s final round, beating Beaver Dam native Daniel Woltman by one shot.  He finished 9-under par for the tournament.

Woltman, a two-time State Open champion, finished with a 2-under par 70.  Kenosha’s Jordan Elsen had the low round of the day, shooting a 6-under par 66 and finished third.

Helminen earned $7,200 for the win.  He also captured the State Open in 2008.

Lemon wins state golf title

Madison’s Jim Lemon captured the Wisconsin State Open yesterday, coming from two shots down with three holes to play to capture the title.

Lemon finished 8-under par and earned $7,300 for the win.  Ryan Helminen of Menasha bogeyed the final two holes and finished second.  Helminen won the 2008 State Open.

Steinhofer wins State Open

August 23, 2012 By Bill Scott

Madison’s Andrew Steinhofer shot a final round 71 to claim a 3-shot victory in the 92nd Wisconsin State Open in Racine.  Steinhofer was the only player in the field to play 72 holes under par, finishing at 3-under-par.

Ben Bendtsen III of Racine finished second and Appleton’s Ryan Helminen 3rd.
