Two Badgers selected in women’s hockey draft

April 30, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin women’s hockey duo of Presley Norby and Maddie Rowe were selected by the Minnesota Whitecaps in the 2020 National Women’s Hockey League Draft on Wednesday night.

Norby was selected by the Whitecaps in the third round, while Rowe went in round five.

Norby ended her Badger career with 94 points in 153 games and tallied at least 20 points in each of her four seasons in Madison.  Ten of her 38 career goals were game-winning scores.  She helped the Badgers win their fifth NCAA title in 2019.

A River Falls, Wisconsin native, Rowe was a versatile player in the Badgers lineup, splitting time between forward and defense her first two seasons before spending her final two years on defense.  Rowe recorded 30 points during her Badger career and a +50 plus/minus rating.  She tallied a career best 19 points during her sophomore season.

Americans fall short against Canada again

February 15, 2018 By Bill Scott

The U.S. Women’s Hockey Team outshot rival Canada 45-23 but when the clock read zero, the scoreboard read Canada 2, United States 1.

Canada has now won 23 straight games in Olympic competition since last losing to the U.S. in the 1998 gold medal game.

The United States had several excellent scoring opportunities that they didn’t finish.  Kendal Coyne scored the Americans only goal early in the third period.

Canada got goals from Meghan Agosta and former Wisconsin Badger Sarah Nurse.  It was Nurse’s goal that would be the game winner for Canada.

Both teams move into the semifinals.  Finland, Switzerland, Sweden and the Olympic Athletes from Russia are battling for the final two spots.  The semifinal games are set for Monday.

Most people expect a U.S.-Canada final, just like it has been in the previous five Olympic Games.  The Americans are hoping things don’t end up like the last four.

tournament and will host Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals on Saturday, March 10, at 7pm at the Kohl Center.

After winning the College Hockey America regular-season championship, Mercyhurst is coming off a loss to Robert Morris in the CHA tournament final.

Wisconsin and Mercyhurst have met in the NCAA tournament twice before, the last time being in the 2009 national championship game, as the Badgers went on to post a 5-0 victory against the Lakers.  Outside of postseason play, the last time the two teams played against each other was in St. Cloud, Minnesota, at the Easton Holiday Showcase last season.  Hilary Knight and Brooke Ammerman combined for four goals in a 7-4 win over Mercyhurst.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the 2012 Women’s Frozen Four, which will be held at Amsoil arena in Duluth, Minnesota, March 16 and 18.
