September 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

Trent Grisham finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 5-for-6 and driving in two runs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 8-3 win over the Marlins in Miami.

Yasmani Grandal clubbed a two-run homer and Lorenzo Cain had three hits and drove in a run for the Brewers, who extended their winning streak to four games.

Grisham started the night hitting just .222.  Five hits later and his average climbed to .260.

Matt Albers got the final two outs of the fifth to get the victory in relief.

The Brewers couldn’t make up any ground on the Cubs in the Wild Card race.  The Cubs knocked off the San Diego Padres 10-2 to stay two-games in front of the Brewers.

Miguel Rojas went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Miami.  Ryan Duggar was the first of nine Marlins pitchers and took the loss.  Miami has dropped three of their last four games.

Cubs break it open late, double up Brewers 10-5

September 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Chicago Cubs did a number on the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen on Thursday night, pulling out a 10-5 victory in the opener of a four-game series at Miller Park.

Kyle Schwarber had the big blow, a grand slam in the sixth off of Drew Pomeranz as the Cubs went from a 4-4 tie to a 9-4 lead.

Wilson Contreras went 4-for-5 with a homer and an RBI double in the win.  David Bote added a solo shot in the ninth as the Cubs won their third straight and increased their Wild Card lead to five games over the Brewers.

Jose Quintana earned the victory, allowing four runs over five innings, improving to 13-8.

Hernan Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Cory Spangenberg clubbed home runs for the Brewers in the loss.

The Brewers send Zach Davies to the mound in game two of the series tonight against Chicago’s Cole Hamels.

Craig Counsell

Yadier Molina hit two home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Miles Mikolas struck out 10 without a walk to earn the win for St. Louis, which has now won 15 of its last 18 games.

The game was delayed in the seventh inning for nine minutes after the Brewers got caught by a pop-up shower while the roof was open.

Yasmani Grandal drew the Brewers to within 4-3 in the eighth inning, clubbing a two-run homer.  But when the Brewers couldn’t draw even, manager Craig Counsell went to rookie Devin Williams in the 9th, instead of closer Josh Hader.  The Cardinals tacked on two more in the ninth to make it 6-3.

The Brewers put two runners aboard in the bottom of the 9th and for a brief moment looked like they [Read more…]

Josh Hader surrendered a home run for the 13th time this season, in just 52 2/3 innings and the Minnesota Twins came from behind to knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Marwin Gonzalez was first pitch swinging in the 8th, taking a poorly located Hader fastball and depositing it over the wall in left-center field.  It was the sixth home run allowed by Hader in 12 2/3 innings since the all-star break.

Hader had allowed just nine home runs in 81 1/3 innings all of last season.

The Brewers had just taken the lead in the 7th inning by scoring four runs to go up 5-4.  Christian Yelich drove in a run with a double and Yasmani Grandal capped it with a  three-run homer.  It was Grandal’s 20th of the season, but his first since July 6. [Read more…]

Brewers rally to beat Diamondbacks

July 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

After trailing early 4-0, the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 7-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Sunday.

Tyler Saladino clubbed a fourth inning grand slam for the Brewers to even the score 4-4.  Then Mike Moustakas’ go-ahead, RBI-single ignited a three-run eighth inning to pull out the win.

Freddy Peralta picked up the victory and Josh Hader nailed down his 22nd save.

Brewers all-Star starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff left after three-plus innings with a strained left oblique and is headed for the 10-day injured list.

Now Milwaukee returns home to open a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park tonight.  Chase Anderson (5-2, 3.96 ERA) goes for the Brewers.  Right-hander Sonny Gray (5-6, 3.40) goes for the Reds.

July 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

The American League extended its all-star winning streak to seven-straight games, knocking off the National League 4-3 in Cleveland on Tuesday night.  That’s 14 of the last 17 for the AL in the annual summer classic.

Joey Gallo’s solo home run in the seventh inning held up for the AL.  Houston’s Michael Brantley, Minnesota’s Jorge Polanco and Boston’s Xander Bogaerts also drove in runs for the American League.

Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka picked up the win and teammate Aroldis Chapman notched the save.  Indians pitcher Shane Bieber struck out the side in the fifth inning and was named the game’s MVP.

Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon homered in the sixth and the Mets’ Pete Alonso added a two-run single in the eighth to pull the NL withone one.  Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers took the loss.

After falling short in “The Starters Election,” Milwaukee Brewers standouts Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal were voted into the upcoming All-Star game in a vote of Major League players.  Brewers ace closer Josh Hader was also added to the squad on Sunday.  All three join starter Christian Yelich, who will start for the National League in Cleveland on July 9.

Moustakas is making his third all-star appearance, while Grandal and Hader are both set to make his second all-star appearance.

Moustakas returned to Milwaukee as the team’s second baseman on a one-year free agent deal.  But he has recently been moved back to third base after the Brewers optioned Travis Shaw back to the minors and second baseman Keston Hiura was called up to play second base.

Moustakas is  hitting .275 with 23 home runs and 49 RBI in 76 games.

Grandal also signed a one-year contract with the Brewers worth $18.25 million during the offseason.  He’s hitting .265 with 18 homers and 46 RBI.

Hader is 1-3 with a 1.77 ERA and a WHIP of 0.62 with 20 saves in 21 opportunities.  Hader has struck out 77 in 40 2/3 innings while holding opponents to a .098 batting average.
