Brewers win streak snapped at 9-games (AUDIO)

April 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

The bats went quiet last night in San Diego as the Brewers fell to the Padres 2-1 at Petco Park.  The loss snapped Milwaukee’s 9-game winning streak which was the longest since the Brewers won 10-straight in August of 2003.

Milwaukee ran into a buzz-saw on the mound in the form of Padres starter Edison Volquez (1-2).  Volquez pitched 7-shuout innings allowing just 5-hits for his first win of the year.  Brewers starter Marco Estrada (2-1) was solid despite taking his first loss of the year.  Estrada went 6 2/3 innings surrendering 2-runs, only 1-earned, on 5-hits.  His biggest blunder was surrendering a long ball to San Diego’s Carlos Quentin.  Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke was pleased with Estrada…

uniform, holding down the San Diego Padres in a 7-1 victory Monday night.

Ryan Braun clubbed a 2-run homer and Yuniesky Betancourt added a 3-run blast, both in the 1st inning as the Brewers build at 5-0 lead and cruised to the victory.

Lohse worked 5-solid innings but had to leave the game in the sixth when he collided with a fielder at first base and dislocated his left pinky finger.  But there is good news on the injury front for a change.  It looks like Lohse won’t miss his next start. [Read more…]

Brewers win back-to-back games for the first time in 2013 (Audio)

April 17, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers used an 8-run 3rd inning to propel them to a 10-8 win over the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night at Miller Park.  The victory marked the first time this season Milwaukee put together back-to-back victories.

Trailing 3-1 in the 3rd, Milwaukee was able to chase San Francisco starter Barry Zito with an 8-spot.  Rickie Weeks tied the game at 3-3 with a ground rule double.  Jonathan Lucroy then slapped a single up the middle to drive in a pair giving Milwaukee a 5-3 advantage.  Yuniesky Betancourt later cleared the bases with a grand slam, his first long ball of the season and fifth grand slam of his career. Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke will take the big frame…

It’s opening day and the Brewers are optimistic (AUDIO)

April 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers late signing of right-handed pitcher Kyle Lohse has quickly

brought some optimism towards a post-season run.

Prior to Lohse signing with Milwaukee, they thought winning games would have to come from the offense.  They’ll still need to score runs, but the added pitching adds promise.  Lohse had pitched for four teams over 12 Major League seasons, but his best seasons have come in St. Louis the last two years, including a 16-3 mark in 2012 with a 2.86 ERA.

Lohse is expected to make his first start with the Brewers on Friday against Arizona.  He threw a bullpen session on Sunday at Miller Park and pitched in one exhibition game after signing late with the club. [Read more…]

Lohse solid in Brewers debut

March 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers got their first look at recently signed pitcher Kyle Lohse Thursday.  Lohse made the start as the Brewers wrapped up Cactus League play with a 6-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Lohse, who saw his first live game action this year, gave up 1-run on 4-hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.  Despite not having a team to pitch for, he tossed simulated games as a free agent to stay ready for when his phone rang.  Manager Ron Roenicke said after the game that the team is likely to keep an extra pitcher on the roster while Lohse works his way back to form.

Offensively, Yuniesky Betancourt had 3-hits, including a home run, as he saw his first action of the spring as a Brewer.  Milwaukee signed the veteran Tuesday to add depth to the bench with Taylor Green being put on the DL.  Betancourt was with the Phillies for a majority of Spring Training.

The final roster decisions are expected to come this weekend as the Brewers host the Chicago White Sox Friday and Saturday at Miller Park.  Opening Day is Monday when the Rockies come to town.

Betancourt returning to Milwaukee

March 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

Yuniesky Betancourt is back with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Betancourt originally came to Milwaukee in the Zach Greinke deal.  He hit .252 with 13 HR’s and 68 RBI’s in 152 games in 2010.  Defensively, he had 21 errors and drove Brewers fans crazy.

Betancourt returned to the Royals as a backup infielder last year, playing in only 57 games.  He hit .228 with 7 home runs and 46 RBI’s.

Betancourt was in the Phillies’ camp this spring but asked for his release a few days ago.  He left hitting .447 in 18 spring games.

He comes to the Brewers because they need some utility infield help.  Jeff Bianchi has been sidelined with a hip injury and the Brewers aren’t satisfied with their depth there.
