Brewers bullpen fails to hang on to victory

July 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tyler Saladino was looking to play hero for the second straight day, but the Brewers bullpen didn’t allow for it to happen as Milwaukee suffered a 6-5 loss in their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Monday night.

Saladino took a first pitch fastball and homered to straight away center, his second grand slam in as many days.  It put the Brewers up 5-4 and their third straight come-from-behind win in sight.

However, Josh Hader wasn’t available to slam the door in the ninth and that proved trouble for the Brewers.  They instead went with Jeremy Jeffress for the third straight day.  Jeffress hung a breaking ball to Eugenio Suarez, who deposited it into the seats in left center, giving the Reds the comeback win. For the second straight day, Eric Thames led the Milwaukee Brewers to a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After a triple and home run on Saturday, Thames clubbed a solo shot in the eighth inning to push the Brewers to a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Zach Davies, who pitched  5 1/3 inning and was solid in a no-decision, drove in the Brewers other run with a RBI single in the fourth.  His one run allowed was his fewest since throwing six scoreless innings at Minnesota on May 28th.

The home run by Thames came off of Kyle Crick in the seventh, his 12th of the season.

With Josh Hader unavailable, Matt Albers worked the ninth to save it for the Brewers.

The Brewers open a four-game series at Cincinnati against the Reds tonight.  They start the day at 45-39, tied with the Chicago Cubs for the Central Division lead.

The Brewers send Adrian Houser (2-2, 2.94) to the mound in the series opener.  It’s his fourth start of the season.  Houser is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA as a starter for the Brewers this season.

Brewers drop series opener against Seattle

June 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Seattle Mariners had 12 hits to pull out a 8-3 series opening win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.  Daniel Vogelbach clubbed a 2-run homer and starter Marco Gonzales (9-6) pitched five innings to earn his fourth straight win to lead the Mariners.

Four Seattle relievers shut the Brewers down over the final four innings.

The Brewers jumped out early with a run in the first, but the Mariners rebounded with a four-run third inning off of Brewers starter Zach Davies.  Davies fell to 7-2 after allowing 6-runs on 6-hits in four innings of work.

Dee Gordon’s run-scoring double in the fifth extended the Mariners lead to 7-1.

Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer and Jesus Aguilar had a run-scoring single for the Brewers in the fifth. [Read more…]

Woodruff leads Brewers to split with Cincinnati

June 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

Brandon Woodruff struck out a career high 12 batters to help lead the Milwaukee Brewers to their second straight win, 7-5 over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Sunday.

Woodruff improved to 9-2.  The nine wins ties him with Jyun-Jin Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the most wins in the National League.

Woodruff  allowed three runs in seven innings to pick up the win.  Jeremy Jeffress allowed two runs in the ninth before closing out the Brewers victory.

Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani struck out all six Brewer batters he faced in the first two innings.  But Travis Shaw clubbed a long home run in the third, setting off a five run outburst by the Brewers. [Read more…]

Twins break open scoreless game with 5-run seventh

May 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins were deadlocked in a scoreless battle through six-and-a-half innings on Tuesday night at Target Field.  When the Brewers went to their bullpen, the Twins put a 5-spot on the board and went on to post a 5-3 victory.

Twins left-hander Devin Smeltzer tossed six shutout innings and Brewers right-hander Zach Davies was equal to the task.  Then came the home half of the 7th when the Twins got to Brewer relievers Alex Claudio and Junior Guerra.

Jason Castro led off with a single to left and a Keston Hiura error put runners at the corners.  Max KLepler followed with a two-run double to right to put the Twins on the board 2-0. [Read more…]

Brewers offense packs a punch in win over Phillies

May 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed four home runs on Thursday, rolling to an 11-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in their series finale.

Christian Yelich clubbed two of the Brewers four home runs, giving him 18 for the season.  Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas also went deep for the Brewers, who extended their win streak to three-games.

Ryan Braun added three hits and reached base five times for the Brewers, who moved eight games over .500 at 27-19 on the season.  Braun improved his career average to .420 against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Zach Davies earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on four hits over six innings.  He improved to 5-0 on the season with a 1.54 ERA.

The Brewers head to Atlanta to open a three-game series on Friday night against the Braves.  Jhoulys Chacin (3-4, 4.57 ERA) goes for the Brewers.  Max Fried (5-2, 3.25) will pitch for the Braves in the series opener.

Davies delivers solid outing in Brewers victory

May 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Just when the Milwaukee Brewers needed a solid pitching performance the most, Zach Davies delivered.

The Brewers needed 18-innings to beat the New York Mets on Saturday night and their bullpen was running on empty.  So Craig Counsell asked his starter on Sunday to go the extra yard to help that bullpen.

Davies threw 7 2/3 innings and 118 pitches to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 victory on Sunday as the Brewers pulled off the three-game series sweep.

Lorenzo Cain drove in the games first run with a sacrifice fly.  Christian Yelich returned to the lineup after missing five games and clubbed his league leading 15th home run of the season.

Cain had to leave the game after being struck on the hand by a pitch.  X-rays were negative.

The Brewers normally don’t take their starting pitchers beyond the 100 pitch mark.  Davies was at 108 after seven innings, but manager Craig Counsell still sent him out for the 8th. [Read more…]

Brewers rotational issues continue, fall to Rockies

May 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

Freddy Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers activated Freddy Peralta before Thursday’s game, giving him the start against the Colorado Rockies.  Things didn’t go so well, leaving one to wonder if Peralta will lose his spot in the rotation.

Peralta allowed four runs in the first inning and nine runs (six earned) in four innings on the way to a 11-6 Brewers loss to the Rockies.  After winning the first two games of the series, the Brewers lost the last two, having to settle for a four-game split.

The Brewers going with Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta in their starting rotation has backfired for the first month of the season.  In 16 outings, 15 of which were starts, have a combined 7.68 ERA. [Read more…]

Aguilar ends home run drought in win over Rockies

April 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jesus Aguilar has been mired in an early season hitting slump.  The Brewers first baseman is hoping his performance on Monday night will pull him out of that slump.

Aguilar had three hits and four rbi’s, including his first two home runs of the season as the Brewers knocked off the Colorado Rockies 5-1 in their series opener at Miller Park.

The three-hit night for Aguilar, raised his average to .156.

Zach Davies (3-0) earned his third win of the season, allowing just a single run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.  He saw  his ERA drop to 1.38. [Read more…]

Brewers fall, Yelich is sidelined

April 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale in New York against the Mets on Sunday, 5-2 at Citi Field.  In the process, star Christian Yelich had to leave the game in the fourth inning with lower back discomfort that he sustained while running the bases.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he didn’t think Yelich’s issue was series enough to think about the injured list but thought it would likely keep him out of tonight’s series opener against Colorado at Miller Park.

After trailing 2-0, Mike Moustakas clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2. [Read more…]
