Urias shuts down the Brewers

April 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Julio Urias fired six shutout innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers knocked off the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 in their series opener on Thursday night at Miller Park.

Urias allowed just one hit and struck out nine for his first win.

Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy homered in a three-run sixth inning for the Dodgers.  Christian Yelich gave the Brewers their only run with a ninth inning home run off of Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen.  It’s the 10th of the season for Yelich.

Zach Davies tossed five shutout innings for the Brewers, seeing his ERA fall to 1.19.  Reliever Matt Albers allowed both Dodger home runs to take the loss. [Read more…]

Yelich leads Brewers past Cubs

April 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich clubbed a two-run homer and drove in three as the Brewers doubled up the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in their series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for Chicago, which cut the Brewers lead in half.  But that’s all Chicago would get off of the Brewers, who won their third straight series to start the season and improved to 8-2.

The Brewers jumped out early as Lorenzo Cain singled in the first and scored on Yelich’s two-run home run.  The home run was the 100th of Yelich’s career.  Yelich also drove in the Brewers final run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

Zach Davies pitched into the sixth for the win.  Josh Hader, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, came on and got the final eight outs in relief for his fifth save.

Kyle Hendricks dropped to 0-2, allowing four runs as the Cubs fell to 2-7.

The Cubs return home to Wrigley for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates today.

The Brewers open a 3-game road series in Los Angeles against the Angels of Anaheim.  Jhoulys Chacin (2-0, 4.22 ERA) shoots for his third win of the season for the Brewers.  The Angels will counter with Trevor Cahill (0-1, 3.75).

Brewers set pitching rotation to start season (AUDIO)

March 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell completed his five-man starting rotation on Thursday.

Following opening day starter Jhoulys Chacin, the Brewers will go with Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Zach Davies.  Davies has been slotted into the fifth spot, while the order in which Peralta, Burnes and Woodruff appear is yet to be determined.

Chase Anderson is the odd man out and will start the season in the bullpen.

Burnes pitched out of the bullpen for the Brewers last season, making 30 appearances and finishing with a 7-0 record and 2.61 ERA.

Woodruff bounced back and forth between the Brewers and their Triple A affiliate.  He ended up making four starts and 15 relief appearances, finishing 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA.

Peralta appeared in 16 games with 14 starts, finishing 6-4 with a 4.25 ERA.

Davies won 17 games in 2017, but rotator cuff inflammation last season meant just 13 starts and a 2-7 record with a 4.77 ERA.

Brewers make roster moves prior to game 5 of NLCS

October 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

Dodger Stadium hosting Game 5 of the NLCS.

The Milwaukee Brewers removed left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez from their NLCS playoff roster after he suffered a high left ankle sprain in the second inning of Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss in 13-innings to the L.A. Dodgers.

Taking Gonzalez spot on the roster is right-handed pitcher Zach Davies, who hasn’t pitched since September 28 and has pitched just 23 innings dating back to May 29.  Davies hasn’t won a game since April 24.

Gonzalez was hurt just one pitch into the second inning, twisting his ankle while trying to field a comebacker off the bat of Yasiel Puig.

Gonzalez was acquired from the Washington Nationals on Aug. 31 and went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and WHIP of 0.95 in five regular-season starts for the Brewers.  He is set to become a free agent following the season and it’s expected that he will not return to the Brewers.

Wade Miley makes the start in Game 5 of the NLCS for the Brewers.  Clayton Kershaw gets the nod at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Brewers land spot in playoffs for first time since 2011

September 27, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers swept the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.  The win clinched the top wildcard spot in the National League as the Brewers a post season playoff spot for the first time since 2011.

The Brewers celebrated with champagne in the locker room after the game, but there’s still more to do.  The Brewers trail the Chicago Cubs by one-half game in the Central Division title race.  The Brewers have the day off today and close out the regular season with a three game home series against the Detroit Tigers.  The Cubs have four games left, starting with the series finale against the Pirates on Thursday and three games against the St. Louis Cardinals in Chicago this weekend.

It means the Brewers will go into Friday either tied with the Cubs for the division lead, or they’ll be one game back. [Read more…]

Davies solid in his return as the Brewers beat the Cubs

September 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

Zach Davies made his first start in a major league game since May 29 and he held the Chicago Cubs to a run on four hits in five innings.  Davies didn’t factor into the decision, but he helped the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs 4-3 in their series opener at Miller Park.

Shoulder and back issues forced Davies to miss 90 games.  When he took the mound on Monday, he did so with a 2-5 record and a 5.23 ERA.

The Brewers fell behind 3-2 in the 8th when Anthony Rizzo clubbed a two-run home run off of lefty Josh Hader.  But the Brewers got one back in the 8th when Mike Moustakas drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score at 3-3.

The Brewers loaded the bases again in the 9th with one out and NL Player of the Week Christian Yelich at the plate.  Yelich slapped a hard ground ball to third.  Khris Bryant fielded it cleanly, but instead of going home for the force out, he went back to step on third for out number two, then fired across the infield to try to double up Yelich to get out of the inning.  But Yelich had something else in mind, legging it out for a fielder’s choice RBI and the Brewers 10th walk-off win of the season.

After struggling in day games earlier this season, Monday’s win was their sixth straight in daylight.  They had dropped nine in-a-row earlier.

The win moved the Brewers to within four games of the division leading Cubs.  The two teams meet again tonight at Miller Park.  Wade Miley (2-2, 2.18) goes for the Brewers.  Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.82) goes for Chicago.

Davies set to return to the Brewers

August 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

After pitching a complete-game shutout for Class A Wisconsin on Monday, right-handed pitcher Zach Davies is set to rejoin the Milwaukee Brewers.  He’s expected to be activated on Sunday in Washington.

Davies needed just 85 pitches in a complete-game shutout this week.  He hasn’t made a start for the Brewers since May 29, missing three months with right shoulder and back issues.

Davies is 2-5 with a 5.23 ERA with the Brewers this season.  The role that he returns to the Brewers in, is yet to be determined.

Davies rejoins the Brewers along with a number of potential September call-ups.  Brandon Woodruff, Aaron Wilkerson and Adrian Houser have all been starting at Triple A Colorado Springs and are candidates to join the Brewers rotation as well.

Davies has the most experience though.  He went 17-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 33 starts for the Brewers last season.

Davies suffers setback

July 26, 2018 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zach Davies was scheduled to pitch for Class A Wisconsin on a rehab assignment on Friday.  Instead, Davies will skip that start and undergo an MRI to try to figure out what is causing his ongoing back stiffness.

Davies first went on the disabled list on May 30 with a shoulder issue.  During his rehab process, he began experiencing lower back tightness, which has been a concern since then.

Davies won 17 games for the Brewers a year ago but has made only eight starts this year, posting a 2-5 record and a 5.23 ERA.

After losing Brent Suter with a UCL injury, it leaves Brewers general manager David Stearns potentially pursuing a starter before the MLB trade deadline at the end of the month.

The Milwaukee Brewers will open a two-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.  Freddy Peralta (2-0) will make his Miller Park debut for the Brewers.

Earlier today, the Brewers announced that center fielder Lorenzo Cain has been placed on the 10-day disabled list (left groin strain).  The move is retroactive to June 24th.  They recalled center fielder Keon Broxton from AAA Colorado Springs to take his place.

The Brewers also released left-handed relief pitcher Boone Logan.

Left handed starter Zach Davies will also make his next rehab start on Friday night with the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Brewers blanked for 9th time this season

May 25, 2018 By Bill Scott

Things had been looking up for the Milwaukee Brewers offense of late, but you can’t win them all.

The Brewers managed just five hits in a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets in the opener of a four game series at Miller Park.  It’s the 9th time this season that the Brewers were shutout, one more than all of last year.

Zach Davies returned from the disabled list and allowed four runs in four innings to fall to 2-4.  Ryan Braun also returned from the disabled list and went 1-for-4.

The Brewers had their three-game winning streak come to an end.

New York’s Steven Matz entered the game with a 1-3 record and a 4.42 earned run average.  He worked six innings, allowed just four hits (all singles) with three walks and three strikeouts.

Mets leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo reached base five times, going 4-for-4 with a walk.  Among his four hits was a double and a triple.

Junior Guerra pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight against New York’s Noah Syndergaard.
