Crosby restructures deal to stay with Packers

August 30, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers restructured kicker Mason Crosby’s contract for the 2013

Mason Crosby

Mason Crosby

season.  His $2.4-million figure for this season has been reduced to $800,000.  But Crosby can earn the $1.6-million back if he reaches certain incentives.

Crosby can earn $400,000 if he’s on the roster for Week 5.  He’ll see another $400,000 if he’s on the roster in Week 10.  He can earn $200,000 if he can hit 75% of his field goals and another $200,000 if he hits 80% of his field goals.  If Crosby hits 85% of his field goals, which is has done only once in his career, would get him another $400,000.

At this point in time, Crosby’s restructuring only affects this season.  His 2014 base salary is still $2.65-million and his 2015 number climbs to $2.8-million.

During the last two practices, when Crosby was competing for his job against Zach Ramirez, he hit 24 of 25 field goals.  He made both of his field goal attempts in last night’s 30-8 loss to Kansas City, hitting from 45 and 48 yards.

The Packers open the regular season a week from Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Packers announce roster moves

August 27, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made their roster moves, getting down to the 75 player limit by 3pm this afternoon.

The Packers released kicker Zach Ramirez after he lost his brief training camp battle with Mason Crosby.

Both kickers hit missed just once on Sunday, but Crosby bounced back with a perfect 16 for 16 effort today, while Ramirez his just 6 of 16 from a variety of distances.

The Packers also put T Bryan Bulaga, WR Kevin Dorsey, RB DuJuan Harris and LB Jarvis Reed on injured reserve.

Safety Sean Richardson, T Derek Sherrod, T JC Tretter and DE Jerel Worthy were all placed on reserve/physically unable to perform.

Packers release Tavecchio, for now!

August 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers released kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, which means the kicking battle in training camp is now down to just two, incumbant Mason Crosby and recently signed rookie free agent Zach Ramirez.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy said there’s still more to come in the kicking battle :14

McCarthy told Tavecchio he’s still a part of the competition.  McCarthy said, “We’re at that point where we need to cut to 75. Obviously, we’ll take

the final cut all the way down to tomorrow.  The final cut down is just not clear to us.”

Crosby and Ramirez were both at practice this morning, but they didn’t kick.  The kicking competition will resume on Tuesday during practice.

Tavecchio hit roughly 86% of his field-goal attempts in practice and preseason games, compared to 80% for Crosby.  But Tavecchio doesn’t have the same leg strength as Crosby or Ramirez.

Mike McCarthy said the Packers wouldn’t likely get down to the NFL limit of 75 players until tomorrow.  The deadline is 3pm.

August 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

Instead of getting ready to make a decision on their kicker for the regular season, the

Mason Crosby

Packers have added a third kicker to the mix.

After working out for the Packers on Saturday, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy decided to sign Ramirez to a contract to allow him to compete with Mason Crosby and Giorgio Tavecchio for the kicking job in Green Bay.

All three kickers competed together for the first time at practice on Sunday.  They kicked from 11 different spots on the field from 34 to 63 yards.  Each kicker got 11 attempts.  Crosby made 10 of 11, missing from 53 yards.  Tavecchio made 9 of 11, missing from 45 and 63.  Ramirez hit 10 of 11, missing from 53.
