Efforts to bring a smoking ban to another Wisconsin community are gearing up in a Madison suburb.

The group "Breath-Free Monona" has launched a petition drive to place a binding referendum on the November ballot. Co-chair Theresa Guilbert says the measure would require a community-wide ban to in place ten days after it i approved by voters. Guilbert is confident the measure would pass.

The group needs about 650 signatures on petitions to force the referendum, and they're hoping to collect one-thousand. Guilbert says the response so far has been "overwhelming."

The petition drive was launched after a study group in Monona recommended a ban be put in place by 2010. Guilbert says waiting that long is not acceptable for the sake of public health.
