The Legislature is being asked to stop drivers from sending text messages on their cell phones.
State Senator Alan Lasee (R-De Pere) is re-introducing his bill to ban the practice. It passed the Senate last session, but failed to get a vote in the state Assembly.
Lasee says many younger drivers are using the texting technology frequently, and the dangers of the practice need to be highlighted. He says publicity has been growing on the issue, after accidents have occurred where people have been killed.
The De Pere Republican expects to catch heat from the younger crowd. However, he says it's a traffic safety issue and he's fairly optimistic the bill will pass.
