The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act will have an impact for some couples come tax time.
IRS-Milwaukee spokesman Christopher Miller says gay couples who got married in a state that allows same-sex marriage will have to change their filing status on federal tax returns. Miller says the ruling will apply regardless of whether or not the couple lives in a jurisdiction that recognizes those unions.

Wisconsin is one of many states with a gay marriage ban on the books and does not recognize same-sex unions. Miller says filing a tax return in that situation could be a bit more complicated. He says couples with questions about how to handle the tax issues should contact the state revenue department.
