The IRS is hoping for a big jump in the number of electronic tax filings this year.

Officials with the Internal Revenue Service say taxpayers should consider filing their federal income taxes online. IRS director of Electronic Tax Administration David Williams says the option is fast, secure, and can have a refund back to you in as little as 10 days. Williams says nearly 67-percent of Wisconsin taxpayers filed online in 2007.

For those who made under $54,000, there's no cost to use e-file. Williams says the IRS has several different programs available on their website to help taxpayers sort through the process.

Williams says filing online is simple, but make sure you go through the IRS website to stay protected. He warns that only providers linked off the IRS website can make sure your information is protected and not taken advantage of.

Many taxpayers have the option of filing their state returns online as well.
