Town of Beloit police are investigating how a car load of teenagers ended up in the Rock River Monday evening.
Police Chief Steve Kopp says officers were called to respond to a report of a vehicle in the water at an area park and three “soaking wet” people trying to flag down passing cars near the park’s entrance. First responders found three teens at the park, and a partially submerged vehicle in the Rock River near a boat landing.
The teens claimed they went to the boat launch to look at the water, but their car slid out onto the ice and broke through. Fire crews said the vehicle had broken through about six inches of ice 50 feet from shore.
Kopp says the 17-year-old driver, Kory A. Prata of Roscoe, Illinois was cited for endangering safety by reckless driving. Another 17-year-old boy was released to his parents, and a 16-year-old girl had to be taken to the hospital for exposure.
