A proposed constitutional amendment would create term limits for elected state officials. The proposal from State Representative Don Pridemore (R-Hartford) would limit state legislators and constitutional officers to 12 years in any one elected office. Pridemore says that should be more than enough time for elected officials to accomplish any goals they have for that position.

Opponents of similar plans in the past say voters already have a say on how long a person serves, but Pridemore says sometimes that system takes too long. He says some lawmakers are able to stay in power simply by doing the bare minimum of what's required of them. Pridemore says the amendment would also keep incumbents from staying almost unopposed in office, by increasing the turnover for any legislative district.

Lawmakers would still be able to run for another office or even try for their old position after taking a term off.
