The State Department of Natural Resources says the Lake Michigan shoreline and its tributaries are free of the invasive Asian carp.

The DNR says 275 samples were taken from harbors and tributaries in Wisconsin, and none tested positive for the carp’s DNA. The tests were a joint project by the DNR, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Asian carp DNA experts from Notre Dame.

Those same scientists found carp DNA beyond the electronic barrier near Chicago that’s supposed to keep the invasive fish away from Lake Michigan.

Officials worry that if the carp make their way into the Great Lakes and begin breeding, the voracious eaters could crowd out other fish and aquatic life that compete for the same sources of food.
