Texting while driving: it can wait. It’s a message that the Wisconsin DOT, AAA, and AT&T have teamed up to deliver to the state’s high school students. Jessica Erickson with AT&T says the theme could use some reinforcement among younger drivers who may not comprehend the risks
“Texting is so dangerous because it takes a drivers eyes off the road for an average of five seconds, which is the length of a football field when you’re traveling at 55 miles an hour,” Erickson said.
This the fifth year for the partnership, which will hold 25 assemblies will be held at high schools across Wisconsin throughout the school year. “We’re going into high schools to educate teens about the dangers, and encourage them to take the pledge to put down the phone and focus on the very important task of driving.”
Texting behind the wheel has been illegal in Wisconsin since 2010, and violators can be fined up to 400 dollars.
