There’s growing concern in Wisconsin about a tree-killing disease. State Forester Paul De Long says oak wilt has started moving into northern part of the state.

The fungus has been in the state for almost a century, but was primarily found in southern Wisconsin counties. In recent years though, De Long says it has begun to spread rapidly and moved from the south into the north. He says it’s likely only a matter of time before it is found in all Wisconsin counties.

Oak wilt is a fungus that cuts off the tree’s water supply. When that happens, De Long says the tree usually dies within weeks.
