The three candidates for the 3rd district U.S. Congressional seat met in Eau Claire for a spirited debate Wednesday night. Democratic incumbent Ron Kind, Republican challenger Dan Kapanke, and independent Michael Krsiean appeared in a 90-minute debate at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

Congressman Kind defended his vote for the healthcare overhaul saying the “consequences of failure” to implement reform would lead to higher costs and more uninsured Americans.

State Senator Dan Kapanke wants the healthcare bill to be repealed and replaced. “If it was a good bill, it would’ve been passed in a bi-partisan manner,” Kapanke said, noting that 34 democrats in the House voted against it.

Krsiean said the bill should be repealed, and that the health insurance system should be replaced with local health co-ops. “We take it out of the realm of the employer. We squeeze out insurance except for very stoploss cases.”

Krsiean also supports dismantling social security and refunding workers contributions.
