Wisconsin's former governor is feeling good about John McCain's chances. After the wheels came off his own presidential bid, Tommy Thompson threw his support to Rudy Giuliani. Now however, Thompson says he's ready to "campaign passionately" for Republican presidential nominee John McCain. "I've known John McCain for a long time," said Thompson. "We haven't always gotten along, but I've always found him to be extremely truthful, hard working, patriotic, and a person you can talk to."

And while his successor as governor feels Wisconsin is going Barack Obama's way, Thompson doesn't think so. "Jim Doyle is drinking some Kool-Aid that is not very relevant to this election," he said. "I think it's going to be close, and I think John McCain can win." Thompson believes Obama's stances on issues such as taxes and abortion rights will mean votes for McCain in rural Wisconsin, enough to overcome Obama margins in Madison and Milwaukee.
