Many areas of Wisconsin are expecting their first big snow of the year, and it might be time to brush up on your winter driving skills.

Several inches of ice and snow are expected across much of the state today. Pam Moen with AAA Wisconsin says it could catch some drivers off guard, especially after some mild fall weather. She says people often take some time to remember that driving in a Wisconsin winter is much different that driving during the summer months.

Moen says the first thing drivers need to do is remember to slow down under slippery conditions. Many accidents are the result of drivers going to fast for snowy conditions and failing to leave enough distance between them and other cars.

Drivers should also make sure as much snow as possible is cleared off of their vehicle. If you haven't already, Moen says you should get out your ice scrapers, snow brushes, and emergency winter driving kits.

Above all else, Moen suggests just staying home if you don't really need to drive anywhere.
