An SUV carrying seven people crashed along Iowa Highway 20, at the Webster City exit, overnight, killing the driver and a passenger from Wisconsin. The Iowa State Patrol’s accident report indicates a Ford Explorer rolled as it exited the highway at about midnight. A passenger from Tomah, 22-year-old Shelly Coenen, was thrown from the SUV and died at the scene. Coenen was not wearing a seat belt. The 19-year-old driver, who was from South Carolina, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Four other passengers are listed in stable condition at the hospital. Authorities say the seventh passenger was treated and released, then taken into custody as she’s listed as a runaway. None of the names of the passengers have been released, but most of the ages have been, along with some hometowns. Two passengers who survived are from Sioux City. Another survivor of the wreck is 13 years old, but a hometown was not listed.
