A collision between a Canadian National freight train and an SUV shut down a major intersection in downtown Appleton for a little over an hour on Tuesday morning. Appleton Police Lieutenant Steve Diedrich said the SUV was stuck in the median, against a fence, at the corner of College Avenue and Richmond Street, following a hit-and-run accident. The other driver took off, leaving the SUV was on the railroad tracks at around 11:00 a.m.
Police officers got the woman who was driving out of the SUV before the train got arrived, and no one was hurt. Diedrich said that although Canadian National had been informed about the situation, the train was already in the city and the conductor didn’t get the message in time to avoid the collision.
A train also struck a car in Ashwaubenon overnight, after the car got stuck on snow-covered tracks. FOX 11 reported that the train engineer said the train crew didn’t know a vehicle was on the tracks and couldn’t stop in time. No one was hurt.
