The Memorial Day Weekend will still be very busy on Wisconsin highways, but the roads will still not be as crowded as they were a year ago. AAA Wisconsin says travel is expected to be down by 1.6 percent from 2012, with about 685,000 Wisconsinites planning a trip of 50 miles or more from home.

The motor club’s Pam Moen says higher gas prices are largely to blame for the drop. Statewide prices for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel are at around $3.95 right now. That’s $0.31 more than a month ago and $0.23 more than during the same time frame last year.

Wisconsin gas prices are currently about $0.30 higher than the national average, largely because several refineries in the upper Midwest have been down for maintenance.
