The story of a Minnesota man convicted of killing his wife from Wausau isn’t over yet. Jeffrey Trevino of St. Paul was sentenced November 25th to 27-and-a-half years in a Minnesota prison for killing Kira Steger a year ago. Trevino is appealing his conviction and sentence.

The jury convicted Trevino of unintentional second-degree murder. Judge Leonardo Castro passed a sentence that was nearly twice what the state’s sentencing guidelines called for due to what he called, “cold manipulation, the selfishness, and lack of empathy in trying to cover up his crime.”

A notice of appeal was filed Thursday in Ramsey County District Court in what’s expected to be a long process. The formal petition papers are expected to be delivered to the courts by early next week.
