The Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group is out with its annual look at dangerous toys out on store shelves this holiday season.
WISPIRG Director Bruce Speight says researchers tested a wide variety of toys for the annual “Trouble in Toyland” report. He says they found several that contained unsafe levels of lead and other chemicals in several toys, along with small parts that could be a choking hazard for younger children.
The report also notes that some toys have parts that just barely exceed federal guidelines for what’s considered a choking hazard, so parents of young children should be careful.
The report only looks at a sampling of toys on the market. Speight says it’s intended to serve as more of a guideline for holiday shoppers to help educate them on what to look out for when buying products for young children.
To aid shoppers, WISPIRG does offer an mobile site that can be used to look up any alerts for a particular toy. Speight also urges consumers to watch for recalls through the Consumer Product Safety Commission and to report any injuries related to toys to that agency.
