Department of Natural Resources officials say this year’s spring turkey harvest was up despite worries over the long winter and lower permit sales.
Officials say hunters registered 41,815 birds this spring, 10.7 percent more than a year ago. That’s despite a decline of hunters in the woods.
The department only issued 210,000 permits this year, slightly less than the 211,000 issued last year. Part of that decline is based off a reduction in over the counter availability of turkey permits in several zones and an end to selling leftover permits.
Officials are crediting the decent weather through the hunt for the increased harvest.
