A standoff with police near Oshkosh turned deadly, after police say two people were found dead in a car stopped along Highway 41.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Captain Mark Habeck says police pulled over the car late Wednesday afternoon, after the vehicle matched the description of the getaway car in a liquor store robbery in Neenah earlier that day. Because of concerns about public safety, officers shut down traffic on Highway 41 in both directions. About two hours into the standoff, Habeck says they heard gunshots come from the car and then found both suspects dead inside the vehicle.

Officials confirmed Thursday that the 29-year-old man was also the one who entered the store earlier that day to buy lottery tickets, left, then returned and robbed the clerk.

While the highway was closed, traffic was backed up for miles in both directions. Traffic in the northbound lanes was restored after about two hours, while the southbound lanes remain closed for nearly five hours.
