The U.S. Supreme Court will soon start considering whether to review gay marriage bans in Wisconsin and other states.
The justices have added the issue to a closed-door conference on September 29th. It does not mean the court will decide that day whether to take any of the same-sex marriage cases which are pending. Still, it’s the first time the issue will be before the nation’s highest court. The justices could delay the matter until January, and still be able to make a final ruling by next June.
Wisconsin, Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia have all filed appeals to rulings which found their states’ gay marriage bans unconstitutional. In addition, two groups of states have asked the Supreme Court to review the bans in Utah, Oklahoma, and Virginia. Those requests seek a uniform national ruling on the legality of same-sex marriage.
