Residents of the Sauk County village of Cazenovia could not say why a 15-year-old ninth-grader shot his school?s principal. It happened around 8:00 a.m. Friday, as classes were starting at the Weston School.

John Klang, the school's 49 year-old principal, was shot three times with a .22 caliber handgun, according to Sauk County Sheriff's Captain Chip Meister. Meister said Klang was flown to U-W Hospital in Madison. He died at approximately 3:30 Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said the male suspect walked into the school with a shotgun – a custodian and several teachers and students wrestled with the boy – and he then broke free, taking out the handgun and shooting Klang. Weston Schools Superintendent, Terry Milfred, says Klang was a highly visible presence at the school, who was injured because he was trying to protect the students and staff.

The Weston School is in a single K-through-12 building with a total of 365 students, including 125 at the high school. The younger students were bused home this morning, while the rest saw counselors and talked with investigators. It was homecoming weekend, and all activities have been canceled.
