2009 Collegiate National Championships - Fort Collins, ColoradoThe USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships get underway in Madison today (Friday) and run through Sunday.  It’s the first trip to Madison since the event was held there in 2004.  Nearly 500 student-athletes representing almost 100 colleges and universities from across the country will compete to win one of 18 national titles.

The event is being hosted by the Wisconsin Badger cycling team in partnership with Team Sports, Inc.  Hundreds of men and women from Division 1 and Division 2 institutions will compete for individual championships in three categories:  criterium, road race and individual omnium.  The collegiate squads will also battle for team titles.

Competition starts this morning (May 7) with the road race beginning at 8:30am at Blue Mound State Park.  A highlight of the weekend’s racing is Saturday’s criterium.  It’ll take place on the Capitol Square in downtown Madison.  Racing is set to begin Saturday at 3:00 pm.  The three day competition will wrap up with Sunday’s team time trial, starting and finishing at the Trek Bicycle Headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin.
