The UW System and legislators have already started sparring over the proposed change in admissions policy. Now the UW wants to hear from you.

According to the UW System's Dave Jiroux, grade points and class rankings aren't the only things you'll need to get into a UW school. Admissions counselors will look at the applicant's entire life experience.

It's similar to the policy already in place at UW-Madison where a person's extra curricular activates will be considered. Do they have work experience? Are the military veterans? Are they leaders in school and community organizations? What is their social-economic and ethnic background?

That's where the legislative critics come in, claiming the UW is trying to make it a race-based admissions policy.

Jiroux says students who took more difficult classes in high school would possibly be given more weight than students who have higher grade points but got them by taking an easier academic schedule.

The UW System has set up a website for you to comment on the change in policy. Go to www.wisconsin.edu/admissions .

The UW is also holding a video conference session 4-7 pm on January 29th to hear comments on the new policy. The public is invited to attend at five campuses: UW-Madison, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Stevens Point.
